So, who's going to be buying Dream Theater's new album: Octavarium? I've heard a few songs off of it and I am telling you now, I am buying it the day of release. If you like Dream Theater, get it for sure. If you have no idea who Dream Theater is, try here. The new album comes out in a matter of days. If you like anything from metal to classical music, you have to give this band a listen.

So back to my original question (and im pretty surprised a topic like this hasnt already been made for Dream Theater), who will be buying their new album?

I think DT has been kowtowing to what's popular to get more fans.

Octavarium is a bit more intriguing than Train of Thought. It's definitely more artsy. It certainly isn't a return to form for them(yes, I've heard the entire album).

They used to be the only band capable to compare with Tool talent wise in the progressive scene.

You're a rabidly fanatical Tool fan, aren't you? There are a great many talents in prog that more than compare with Tool. And yes, I happen to like Tool quite a bit.

I've been listening to the album a LOT recently. I really enjoy it, can't wait to pick it up in a couple weeks. One of their better recently I feel. "These Walls", "Never Enough" and "Octavarium" are all great tracks!

On a side note, it cracks me up how in ANY music thread, there is always at least one person that plays the "they were so much better before they sold out" card. Get over it, bands change, times change. Hopefully bands grow and evolve, thats part of being an artist.

All I can say is, this album ROCKS! :punk: Best album I've heard in a while. A lot better than Train of Thought. But it's easy to say that Dream Theater is not what it used to be. When you make an album like Scenes from a Memory, it's almost impossible to make an album that's even better.

Ofcourse, there are lots of factors that play when making an album. For instance, the studio where they recorded. When making their two best albums (imo), Images and Words, and Scenes from a Memory, they used Bear Tracks studios. Which, in my point of view, is a LOT more inspiring than studios like the one they used for Train of Thought. It plays a great role in writing music. And it's very noticable, because everyone can hear that Train of Thought is much less inspired than SFAM.

Also, you have to keep in mind that bands have to progress and experiment. And Dream Theater is THE example for bands that do that. You can never expect to hear the same thing when they create a new album. Their genre is called PROGRESSIVE rock/metal for a reason. :)

As for Octavarium, this CD is really inspiring. The tracks are very different from each other. For example, The Answer Lies Within, is very calm, simple, but beautiful. It has more of a modern poppy feel to it. When Panic Attack, is really a hard metal kind of song, that blows you right of your chair. And imo still the best track, Octavarium, is a masterpiece. It has all the emotions that a song should have, where there's also a lot of technically challenging and hard passages that are obligatory to a DT song. Ever since I first heard this song, it automatically ranked as one of my most favorite songs ever.

And, not to go unmentioned, the playing talent of DT members, is still the best today. Not even a band like Tool can top that. I'm a musician myself, and able to play a great deal of Portnoy stuff. Portnoy outranks all modern drummers today, even Danny Carey. And the same goes for John Petrucci or Jordan Rudess... They're just musical geniouses, that can play everything from death metal to jazz.

As you can see by my signature, Mike Portnoy is my drumhero. And that's not just because he can play fast, or technical, but also because he has a great creative mind, which has a lot of different sides. Listen to Transatlantic, OSI, Dream Theater. They're all different, and even Mike Portnoy's playing is different everywhere. You can still hear his style, but it's not the same. :p

And... if you're actually still reading this, thanks :p This was probably my longest post ever, so I should quit, or else I might even get tired :p

kthxbye~

,Jun 5 2005, 08:17]And who are you to define the parameters of "over-rated"? I'd like an explanation

586018432[/snapback]

Its not all it's fans cook it up to be. Who am I? I'm just offering my opinion. I think that was quite obvious considering it's a message board.

And who are you to say that DT was the only prog-metal band comparable to to Tool (which isn't prog-rock in the first place in my opinion) talent wise?

Another one: Queensryche

sounds like a collection of bsides to me. the "leak" has caused quite a stirr. i would really not be surprised if they release a totally diff cd than what leaked.

i mean, the first track is like a different take on "As I Am" and where the hell is the hardness? Portnoy is a bitch!

i heard the audio samples that were posted and did not like what i heard. i have heard rumors it is a fake collection that portnoy put out just before he removed the forums. we shall see... but i can get 10 rolls of toilet paper for the price of this cd if it is the same as what i heard on the samples.

    • RevPDF 4.5.0 by Razvan Serea RevPDF is a free, fully offline PDF editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux that lets you edit text and images directly inside PDF files — no internet connection, no account, and no cloud uploads required. Unlike bloated alternatives that demand subscriptions and constant connectivity, RevPDF fits in under 60MB on desktop while delivering a complete editing toolkit: annotate, redact, sign, compress, split, merge, convert, and reorganize pages, all processed locally on your device. Smart font matching ensures edited text blends seamlessly with the original, and multi-language support includes RTL scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew. Where most PDF editors force you to choose between features and simplicity, RevPDF manages both. You can build interactive forms from scratch with text fields, checkboxes, and dropdowns, permanently redact sensitive data before sharing, draw freehand on contracts and diagrams, and add custom watermarks — all without a single file leaving your machine. Edit Text and Images Directly Inside PDFs RevPDF supports true inline PDF editing — not just annotation layers on top of a document, but actual modification of existing text and images within the file. A smart font-matching engine identifies the font used in the original document and applies it automatically when you make edits, so changes blend naturally with the surrounding content. You can reposition elements, resize images, and update text across single pages or entire documents. RevPDF 4.5.0 release notes: This is one of the biggest updates to RevPDF yet. A lot of things people have been asking for are finally here. New Features Auto Redaction Permanently redact sensitive text and areas from your PDFs before sharing. Perfect for scanned books or double-page spreads. New Drawing Tools More tools for freehand drawing and markup, better for annotations, sketches, and detailed notes. Continuous Scrolling in Editor The editor now scrolls continuously through pages instead of jumping between them. Working through long documents is a lot smoother now. PDF Metadata Editor View and edit the metadata stored inside your PDFs, including title, author, subject, and keywords. Better Font Matching Text edits now blend in more naturally by doing a better job of matching the original font. Tabbed PDF Viewer Open multiple PDFs at once in tabs and switch between them without going back to the home screen. Add Links Insert hyperlinks anywhere in your PDF, to external URLs or to other pages within the document. Share & Print Shortcuts Share or print directly from the editing screen, home screen, and viewer. No extra steps.
