Hosting and Domain name

Question

My father is looking for some hosting and a domain name for his small business, preferably Australian based.

I've had a look in the 'Neowins Top Host's' thread, and googled around, but rarely do the company's hosting site tell you whether they're actually reliable etc.

So, can anyone reccommend some quality hosting (small needs, ~200mb PHP & MySQL, not sure about bandwidth but it's only a small site at the moment) and a quality domain registrar, and maybe give me a few pointers to take into account when purchasing hosting and a domain?

Thanks again.

I'd purchase the domain through www.godaddy.com, as they've been around forever, are VERY affordable, and I've had about 5 domains with them for years now, never a problem.

As for hosting, you'll get hundreds of opinions. A lot of people here on Neowin love www.asmallorange.com. I've never hosted with them myself, but I hear nothing but great things.

May I also suggest http://www.bostonwebstudio.com? You can see the status of each of our 6 different links to the internet at the bottom of this page, if it helps with reliability.

i run my father's website (globalwatchband) and it's hosted at hostrocket (www.hostrocket.com). great service and very fast turn-around times on trouble tickets. if he's going to be doing a small business and maybe selling something, hostrocket has a free shared ssl certificate. we've been with them for a few years and never had any problems. guaranteed uptime too.

I have noticed people praising A Small Orange and Go Daddy, but the only problem is that (i think) they're not Australia based.

My dad prefers to be able to just ring them up if his site is having a problem.

But i will speak to him and get back to you.

Thanks again.

You could try http://bihira.com

I've been with them for quite a while and a lot of my friends have hosting there too. They have nice, affordable packages ($2.50 a month is the lowest one) and though they aren't australia based, the owner does have AIM and is very helpful and gives support over AIM. He also has a support ticket thing on his site and responds very quick. He's really reasonable as far as payment goes, a friend of mine didn't have any money for hosting, so the guy gave him a month or two free until he could pay him. I also (by accident) forgot to pay and he contacted me a month later about my late payment without shutting my site down first.

When registering, you also get a free domain and you also get free advertising on his site at the top which is really nice. If you need more info, you can IM me: dtrmp4

And if you do decide to register there, could you tell him dtrmp4 reffered you? When you refer someone, you get a month of free hosting!

I use go daddy. I only use it becuase its only 3.95 a month for the basic hosting plan. It really does suck though. Like my web pages load really slow so I wouldnt recomend them. Does anyone else know of a place that is 3.95 or below 5 dollars
