[Ubuntu 5.04] Various problems and questions

Recommended Posts

I installed Ubuntu 5.04 yesterday and have quite a few problems, which I hope someone here might help me solve. Here's the most important of them:

1. Internet Connection

My ADSL modem (the Thomson SpeedTouch 330) is known to be difficult to install and for me has been completely impossible. I've found a lot of guides on this subject but none of them has been comprehensive enough for a complete n00b like myself.

2. Sound Card

The soundcard is integrated into the mainboard, it's a CMedia CMI9761. The system seems to recognize it properly and it is displayed in the volume settings but no sound is coming from the speakers.

My setup:

AMD Sempron 2400+

ASRock K7 Upgrade 880 (Via KT880) - http://www.asrock.com/product/product_k7upgrade880.htm

512MB RAM

nVidia GeForce2 GTS

Thanks for your help!

Can't help with the modem, but regarding the sound: if it was detected, it _should_ work. Which means, it's probably muted (Linux always sets the volume for all channels to 0 by default, to protect your speakers and your ears). Open a terminal and start "alsamixer". After you're done with the settings, become root and enter "alsactl store", this should ensure that your settings stay that way after a restart...

Mabye someone can help me understand why there are drivers for modems?

I have sbc yahoo dsl. I plug the net connection into the modem and then have an ethernet cable going to the router and I setup linux on dhcp? Why does modem drives need to be installed? What do they do? Sorry for not understanding mabye someone can clear this up for me :)

Some people have modems that don't have ethernet connections, and the only possible way to connect them is to a USB port. Mine, also a Thomson(nee alcatel) speedtouch 330, is one of them. The only way to connect it is via a usb port to a PC, and the PC will obviously need drivers for it.

About getting the speedtouch to work: Try http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/. If that doesn't work for you, I can provide a tarball of the files which I used to use on Ubuntu 5.04, all you'll need to do is extract the tarball to a directory and run a script inside it to connect.

I tried speedtouchconf but to no avail. I would be very grateful if you could provide me with such a tarball.

Thanks!

Do you know what revision your speedtouch is? I have the files for a rev 4 model, but if you have an older revision I'll need to grab some alternative firmware...

The rev 4 model is silver coloured, and a sort of flattened round-ish shape... (a silver version of the attached). What colour is yours?
