OD has one big useage advantage that RK doesn't: you open an application from the dock, OD gives the window focus. If RK did this, I would be all over it. It's transition is much smoother and it just has a nicer feel to it, IMO.

i have tested out all of the docks made

OD

RK

YZ

Aqua Dock

I Found OD to be fast, and slow in some ways, eg: when starting it it launches fast, but when closing and then relaunching it sometimes takes a while to kick in, it tends to give a high latency when you look at the prefreces of an application in the dock (EG: changing its icon)

RK tends to be smooth but i feel a slight slowness when you have icons on the highest size in maginfied.

YZ was the best for its time, it used not alot of system resources and looked like the actual OSX Dock - Sadly it was shut down by Apple

Aqua dock - came with a virus, and was a total rip of Y'Z Dock

there are many others i have tried, flash dock, Easy Dock, Java Dock and many more, but the best has to be OD (Y)

RK is free I think? but it hauls resources badly, I tried it with 23 Icons and it went up to 19MB, while Yz'dock didn't even go past the 10MB, object dock = pay so no :p

OD does have a free version.

The last part that you mentioned is not entirely accurate. There are two versions of ObjectDock...the regular free version which is similar in respect to yz, rk, etc. Then there is the ObjectDock Plus version...which of course has a few more features and will cost you a small amount. As far as its memory usage (Plus version)...at any given time, it will use from 1mb up to 9mb...but I have never tried it with 23 icons though...lol. :)

True forgive me, as bangbang023 also reminded me about the pay version, Well I'm a shortcut freak:blush:lush: and I hated that as default RK made my minimized windows go to the dock instead of the taskbar ( yeah I know It can be turned :)f :). And I feel it doesn't handle yz'docklets very well, like the resource monitor mentioned below it would appear normally for about 1, then It would change the icon to like a dll type i:pinch:inch: So I vote yz0dock, o wait that's not in the list, hmm RK launcher gets my vo:yes:yes:

let's see

Ares

Mirc

Gaim

Adobe CS

Gimp

Filezilla

VLC lan player

Opera

IE

Word

Powerpoint

Samurize

Desktop shortcut ( i've desktop icons disabled so I have to click to actually see t:pm :p)

MSN messenger*

Yahoo Messenger*

AOL messenger*

*Yeah I know gaim has all these, and I do use it as my main IM client, but you can't go wrong with the original client:) :)

Slate clock

Resource Meter

Encarta 04

Adobe Go live!

Well Get

Cygwin

The Cleaner

Spybot S&D

Lavasoft ad-ware

well actually 25 not:p3 :p

As you see /me is quite lazy, and I have startup button and quick launch disabled:happy:appy:

YZ is the best and will always be

RKDock is the next best

OD is the worst imo but I dont like any of Stardock's programs.

I'f you could combine the minize to bar effect in RKDock into YZ dock it would be perfect.

I have to disagree with that yzdock will "always be the best" simply because...well...it's not in development any more. RK & OD & Moby(?) still are, and have lots of room for improvment (bug fixes, resource usage, features, etc). I still use YzDock from time to time...it's a great program, there is not doubt about that, but it's days are numbered. :pinch:

There is a new version of ObjectDock in development that not only has new zoom effects but has some alternative mouse over effects as well that are quite cool. Look for it in a couple weeks.

BTW, ObjectDock IS FREE.

When can we see some betas to play with?

Actually, I use ObjectDock on my desktop and RK Launcher on my laptop. The reasons for this are that RK Launcher is super fast on my laptop whereas ObjectDock can lag when coming out of auto-hide when other things are open. On the other side, RK Launcher runs laggy on the desktop, yet Objectdock runs super smooth... weird eh? Well that might help someone decide.

My laptop - PIII 933

My desktop - dual PIII 933
