Hello Everyone,

I am new to using routers and such, but I am building a network at home, and for the most part, have always used a simple network with either a hub or switch. I have now upgraded myself to 'router' status and want to start using the benefits of a router.

My main question is about accessing my Voip modem through the router.

Currently it is connected as follows:

Internet --> Router --> Voip Modem

I have been able to access both the router & voip modem without any problems. The problem is that I have to access them seperately and not connected to each other.

The voip modem works in the current configuration, but I am not able to access the modem. I have to disconnect the voip modem and connect it directly to a PC to access the voip modem.

The router in my network uses 10.0.0.x for addressing and the voip modem uses 192.168.15.x for addressing.

the voip modem is a D-Link DVG-1120. It comes with its own firewall and such. It has a WAN connection and a LAN connection (both ethernet). I use the WAN connection in order for Voip to work in my current configuration. The lan is really for any other computer to connect to that particularly modem. (so WAN = uplink, LAN = regular port).

After this long explanation of how I have things setup, is it possible to access 192.168.15.1 through my current configuration (through my router)? Do I need to setup IP forwarding? Or is it something else that I need to do?

Any suggestions are always welcomed! Thanks! :)

If you're using a real router (not an "ADSL Router") then yes, you can access the 192.168.15.0 network through the router using IP Forwarding. Alternatively, you could just change your whole network to the 192.168.15.0 network. There is no real reason not to.

Um dude that D-Link DVG-1120 is a home Gateway device or router.. You really have NO use for 2 routers.. The DVG-1120 can plug right into your broadband modem..

You could just use the switch portion of your other router.. But currently your double natting.. ie your other router has a public IP address on its WAN, than the 10.x.x.x network on the lan side.. your VOIP gateway/router has a 10.x on its wan..

Your setup is more convoluted then it needs or should be.. I suggest you go over the documentations of your products -- here is a link to the manual for your 1120 ftp://ftp.dlink.com/VoIP/dvg1120M/Manual/..._manual_110.zip

From a quick look - you can set a manual IP on the WAN side of that 1120, change it to work in your 10 network.. And then you should be able to access its controls from this wan port.. You may need to enable that feature, etc.. RTFM

You really have NO need for the other router.. your VOIP router looks like it provides most all the functions you would need in a SOHO router.. What features of the other router are you looking for -- that your VOIP router does not already provide?

Hey Budman, ... thanks for the advice... i changed my lan to match the dlink voip router..... i use the voip solely for voip... not for any routing capabilities... my other router (which is a zoom x6 5590) is what is connected to the internet... then connects all my lan & wireless.....

so my configuration is as follows:

internet --> adsl wireless modem & router --> voip, PC, laptop, etc.

once again... thanks for the help!! :)

    • I can't believe it was only two years since the last time MS raised their prices and now they think they can do it again so soon. Of course they needed to backtrack on this. I hope Nintendo is next.
    • I guess I gotta be even more specific then since I'm looking for an absolute confirmation.  The mini PC has never booted up or powered on by me. I'm assuming it'll be like buying a new PC from a store. Nothing is set up. Like absolutely nothing on the mini PC because I can't emphasize this enough. My USB drive already has Windows set up on it from my other desktop so I know it's clean. So now I connect it to the mini PC before it's even booted up or go to the desktop. I then turn on the mini PC and boot into the USB drive. I should see an existing partition. I'll delete it and then install Windows again over the entire drive. I don't necessarily want to create a separate partition. Once it installs and boots to the desktop, I'm assuming the drive is "clean" and free of any malware/viruses. Basically, this process will eliminate any potential for malware/viruses to still somehow hide in the SSD and then potentially affect me later.  I'm being very anal about this because I really don't trust anything bought from AliExpress, but the price was very tempting.  Is Windows Defender reliable? Afterwards, if I do a full scan and it doesn't find anything in the SSD and the USB drive, can I be confident the mini PC is now safe and secured to enter my banking credentials? If not, what else can I do to be absolutely certain?
    • I got an ESR Qi2 vent charger for my car and it's fantastic. It's very strong magnet and holds the phone securely over the worst potholes/roads, and my iPhone does charge. In Summer, the AC blows on the vent keeps and keeps the phone cold. In winter, I just close that vent, so it still stays cold. I agree with you on the Android front. Why not just build in the magnets like Apple does? It's frustrating to buy a case that adds magnets.
    • Hey, I've been using Windows since I was a little tyke. But for the last 15 years, I have been using Linux. I'm using EndeavourOS/Arch atm. wipe it, as in deleting anything from the SSD in the computer. Make a new partition. USB booting device should be free of malware, as long as you download it directly friom MS. Not some XYZ company.
    • "Nuking it" is slang for doing a clean install. USB installation media... delete the partition... start fresh.
