Net Nanny

My lovely son loves to disable net nanny by windows task manager, then he will put it all back so he can get more time. I don't want to get rid of task manager, however I would love to shut him down so he can't do that. Any idea's? :rolleyes:

yea, looks like that guide may be the only way to handle it, although I got some spyware once that disabled task manager...maybe you should just look for that.

I think she's using it to limit his access to the computer such as "2 hours a day if you do chores"

This is more a time limit...being up til 3am....I can't sleep well and guess what if he wants privacy and time he can move out and pay for cable and be up all night! Then I can SLEEP! He doesn't work, we do! WE RULE:)

My parents never complain if I'm using the laptop or desktop late at night and they are pretty light sleepers. As long as they can't hear it (I have headphones) its OK with them.

THANK YOU!!!! I am very curious to see his face when he gets a taste of his own medicine! He is not really restricted I just feel this is like a phone call and you never use to let your kids stay up all night talking on the phone. He gets 8hrs a day...no restrictions. During school it is less. NOT MUCH! We have tried to let him regulate...to no avail. Kids have to have rules otherwise how will they ever learn. They also need limits and have to learn consideration for others. Basically we don't harp on him...he is a great kid and responsible..he just gets hooked like kids who love nitendo ect....Thank You all and do what works for you..I will do what is best for us:)

If I ever overdid my computer limit, my parents would have severe (for a kid) consequences for me.

They'd take away my hard-drive while I was at school, and they'd take away my N64 each day if I didn't obey my time limit.

I'd suggest ditching Net Nanny and hitting him where it hurts. Teach him that if he goes over his limit for one day, then he won't have ANY time the next day. Your son can attempt to hack around any software you install, but if you remove his harddrive (it's not all that hard), he can't do anything.

If my daughter was on her pc until 3 am she'd be grounded from it for a week. Once she learned to obey the boundaries she'd be able to use it again.

What I dont get is why a company hasn't written a better piece of software. Sure there are programs out there that restrict or monitor a child but they all do a half ass job and the moment you install two or more (for example one program monitors IM, the other time) the computer becomes unstable. I can't write programs but if I could that would be the program to have. Recently a survey was done at my sister's elementary school (she just finished the 6th grade) and 80% of the parents wish they had more control over what their kids our doing on their computer because they feel their own child is smarter then them at using the computer and are knowledeable enough to hide their activity.

I praise you for being proactive in enforcing your time limit. Since you are the one paying for all the bills and he doesn't work him I agree with others that you should go a little harsher on him. He either follows the rules or he just doesn't get to use it. Remember the computer is a privelidge not a right. However if you don't want to go harsh, the last thing you could do is enable internet restriction from the router (if you have a router). I know Linksys has had a feature like that for years where you put in a mac address and select the hours you will allow that connection online.

OMG! Some people should not be allowed to have children. I don't really see any problem for children to have an unlimited time to spend on the computer or play video games, as long as they do well in school and write their homework, of course.

Anyway, no matter what you do and what software you install, your son will always be able to hack it and find a way out.

I have much more freedom now. Unlimited time doing whatever I want, but my parents imposed these restrictions because the consequences of not working hard enough in elementary school don't really hit you. You only start realizing that in high school.
