Ok, i currently have an AMD 1.3ghz, so while i'm sorting out my hard drive it would make sense to do something about that too.

What's involved exactly? I'd guess at something like this being a long process, instead of just replacing the old one with a new one. Bear in mind i have had no experience in upgrading anything at all in the past computer wise

I don't know, wouldn't know how to find out either. I was just going to get a better AMD one.

Download Everest and find out what motherboard you have (after starting it, go to motherboard > motherboard. The second line should be the model of your motherboard).

well maybe you should buy a new board and a cpu

make sure u burn or backup all your files

and make sure when u work with any parts u have an antistatic wrist strap

^ those straps are overrated?:? Just ground yourself by touching the power supply from time to time

Yeah you can ebay might be the best place to look

owell its better to be safe i use the antistatic wrist straps and mats

The info I am reading on is says it needs a Thunderbird or Duron processor..... I think 1.3GHz was as high as the thunderbird got..... So if you want to upgrade the CPU you have to go Duron I think they got up to 1.8..... but eh, IMO it would be better just to upgrade the whole motherboard/cpu

I'm going to have enough trouble upgrading a hard drive never mind a new motherboard and processer  Just wouldn't know what to do, there is so much other stuff attached to the motherboard as well, so i expect that all has to come off and go on a new one.. then all that has to be installed..

And knowing my luck it wouldn't work so i'd be stuck with a non working computer, and no internet for help :(

Ok... if i'm buying from this site ^, which motherboard would i need if i was to buy a pretty powerful AMD - http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductLister.aspx?GroupID=464 - and which would AMD would i buy, i'm on Windows XP so would that mean AMD Athlon XP?

No you don't have to get a XP CPU if you are using Windows XP any CPU will work. What really matters is how much you want to spend...... If you do get another Motherboard and CPU you will have to get new ram, the motherboard you use now has 168pin new motherboards use 184pin

Well here is a picture of your motherboard I got off google, see that red circle those are your ram slots so you only have three, maybe you are thinking about the PCI slots? They are those white ones near the bottom....But yeah I know you will need new ram if you upgrade because it does not matter how much you have what matters is the pin count and the ram you have now is 168 whereas most new motherboards use 184

Thanks, yeah i was thinking about those, silly me :( I have two in there with one free space. How will i know new RAM i buy will fit a new motherboard if those havent, i had one of them fitted less than a year ago so it wasnt that old?

When i replace this motherboard with a new one, will my computer auto detect everything or will there be even more stuff to do? I have something in the PCI slots as well.. as well as a fan, something else right above the PCI slots, in a more browny colour, and a sound card at the bottom.

Apoligise for sounding very thick here :D

The memory you'd need is 184-pin memory, also known as DDR memory. That's what the majority of memory being sold today is, so you shouldn't have a problem with that. Your PCI stuff will work in the new motherboard, as will your AGP graphics card. If I'm understanding the picture correctly there's an even longer brown slot at the bottom. Anything that's in there will not work on your new motherboard. As long as you aren't using a SATA hard drive, all you'll have to do is reinstall/install Windows. You'll want to install drivers for your sound and video cards, but that should be it.

That's an ISA slot. A new motheboard would not have one of these. However, it's a safe bet that any new motherboard's onboard sound (integrated into the board itself) would offer better sound quality anyway.

I don't normally say this, but since you admittedly know very little, you really might want to consider buying a prebuilt and saving yourself the trouble of something going wrong.

So my Creative Labs Soundcard won't work if i buy a new motherboard, at all? I'm not buying a new one of them as well

Nope. The onboard sound on your new motherboard would probably be an improvement over it, so you shouldn't need a seperate sound card anyway.

    • You mean BSD. The UNIX kernel is not open source.
    • I have been on Linux Mint full-time since Jan 2019. while there is a learning curve, it's worth it if you can make the switch, which I can. I mainly browse web, play some games (generally Lutris(Windows games), or through emulators (MAME/Mesen/Flycast etc) etc), and use a small amount of Windows programs (Foobar2000/7-zip/WinRAR/ImgBurn etc) etc. it's nice to dodge the bloat/BS of Windows as you can really feel Linux is all around faster, especially certain things. p.s. recently I enabled NTSync for games since Linux Mint recently offered the 6.14 kernel, which has NTSync support (it's not enabled by default though but you can enable it temporarily for your current boot of the OS through 'sudo modprobe ntsync')
    • A rotten article full of handwaving of anti-consumer practices. Aside from the fact that no, not even close to every piece of major software collects information about its users, ethical developers make such telemetry opt-in and allow it to be completely disabled. To use KDE Plasma as an example, you're shown a greeter upon first boot that gives users the option to send the developers telemetry, with the default being off and 'off' actually meaning off. Windows 10 has never offered that capability - only a promise that Microsoft will slurp up less of your data if you spend time tweaking 50 different privacy settings. There is still absolutely no way to completely opt out of sending Microsoft telemetry in any version of Windows 10 (or 11, naturally). Even using group policy in Enterprise editions only allows you to reduce telemetry to the bare minimum. Home-focused editions don't even get that option. Articles like this dismissing user privacy concerns as "FUD" are a part of the reason Microsoft felt confident enough to go so much further with Windows 11. I guess you get what you deserve in that respect. Personally, I finally made the move to Linux after 15 years or so of dabbling with it, but never really considering a permanent switch. Enjoy your bright, shiny Windows future. You asked for it, after all.
