Here is how I think you would end up doing it with HTML:

Make a really big mess of some really long code, lots of files to make, lots of time consumed.

Here's how you DO do it in PHP/MySQL

PHP submits data to MySQL, php reads data submitted from MySQL....user sees on site.

Easy =)

I think some free sites out there offer it too, but recommend going for something of your own because there won't be any banners. If you need PHP space you can signup @ www.tripod.co.uk (they only have a banner on every 100 views or so) and if you check out my site...

Take a look at the guestbook, that can be used as a shoutbox and it uses raw text files and no mysql if that would confuse you. If you want to script just email me.

Okay, I guess I'll have to find me a good host that supports php.

another question...can you make a site where people can sign up and stuff through php?

For your shout box, maybe you could try THIS . I've used it before and it works fine.

Anyway, what do you mean "where people can signup through php and stuff?" Do you mean people register for your site and then can access certain areas once they do?

but don't get used to it and figure out how to use another system. phpnuke is easy enough to use, but it's like the AOL of php CMS's... ;)
