edit the msstyles file.

Sadly, I have no mssstyle. I assume you meant .theme file and just mis-typed.

I can't find anything in there about editing theme files. Perhaps I missed it.

I don't know if this will help you or not. You can open a .theme file with notepad and edit anything in there. when you are done remember to hit save or save as if you want to change the name of the .theme.

That is helpful, thank you.

Q: What is the difference between a theme and a visual style?

A: The terms ?theme? and ?visual style? are often thrown around carelessly and used interchangeably, which adds to the confusion, but the distinction is clear.

A visual style (*.msstyles) is the file that skins the windows, taskbar, start menu, and other elements of the Windows appearance. Visual styles are loaded in the Appearance tab of the display properties dialog.

A theme (*.theme) is a visual style with saved settings, wallpapers, icons, and so on. Themes are loaded in the Theme tab of the display properties dialog.

When people say themes, they usually mean visual styles.

.theme is just a pointer. what visual style do you want? download that one and edit it.

.theme and .msstyles are two entirely different things.  A theme defines what wallpaper, msstyles, cursors, etc to display.  A .msstyles file contains the visual style.  There is no .msstyles file inside a .theme file.

In case you're blind or something: msstyles aren't inside of themes. They're seperate files. Normally found in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes.

Yes, I gathered that. I assumed dreamz was trying to tell me to to edit the .theme file instead (like M118LR suggested later), and I was unable to find information on this in his guide.

no no, i was pointing out the difference between themes and visual styles. i wrote the faq for a reason.

as for editing the .theme file with notepad, that won't do anything. you won't be able to edit anything significant like bitmaps or margins, since those are contained in the msstyles file.
