No, it works fine here. Can't you just double-click the .msstyle file?

Double clicking the .msstyle file only brings up an XP dialog asking what program I want to use to open the file. I haven't had to do this for any of the other VS' I have stored...........Thanks for the advice though.

Man, I miss using this VS. I used the WB port, & I loved it. But, I've since uninstalled WB & hacked my uxtheme.dll (mainly b/c I wanted to use LE4). I can't get System 5 to show up in my Display Properties as an option under the Appearance tab. I've unzipped into the C:WINDOWS\Resources\Themes folder like all the other VS' that I have stored there, but it still won't show up. Does this version require StyleXP, or another prgram to use it?

Download the theme again, and run the .bat file to install it. Let me know if you're still having problems :)

PS Colour pack is still in progress (having some shellstyle issues! :))

I forgot to mention I tried that w/ my original install, but I got a message in the DOS window advising of missing files, or something like that. I'll try it again tonight & will post a screen shot if I get the same error. Anyway, that's why I tried manually extracting the .msstyle...Thanks.

Try moving your "system" or "system 5" folder from c:/windows/resources/themes/ and the running the installer again. I'm afraid that version of the installer may be a little buggy, since I usually do Linux dev. It's had many improvements for the next version but if you DO have any problems, please post a screenshot.

The reason I said to download it again was just because I thought it was wierd it wouldn't open when you double-click the .msstyle

O.K. I deleted all references to this theme in the Resources folder, and I even re-downloaded the install .zip file. I double-clicked on the install.bat, & got the same screen as follows (I tried to widen the window so all of the message could be seen, but it wouldn't expand):

system5dialog6pm.jpg

I simply hit <Enter> to escape that window. "System5" still doesn't show in Display Properties>Appearance>etc. In Explorer, I navigated to the C:WINDOWS\Resources\Themes foldr. There is a folder there called "System". I opened-up that folder, & there is no .msstyle file; there is a "Shell" folder, but no shell.dll files are in it; basically "System" is an empty folder (& yes, I do have the

EDIT: Tried extracting the .msstyle & shell files manually, & still no go......

    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
    • Hello, The Media Creation Tool is still at v10.0.26100.7019 from October 2025. Just looks like the backend has been updated. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
