Another Cingular Merge

Recommended Posts

I've heard a rumor that Cingular will be merging with another cell phone company. It was either Sprint or Verizon. They would also me developing a walkie talkie feature like Nextel's.

After doing some research, I found that Sprint is merging with Nextel, so I find it more likely that they will merge with Verizon, that is, if they actually do merge with anyone else.

Is the rumor I heard true? If it is, does anybody know whether it will be Sprint or Verizon?

Thanks.

The reason that happened was because Sprint has a pretty good cell phone system, and Nextel has a really good IDEN system, so Nextel merged with Sprint to have the best of both systems.

I don't think Cingular will merge with anyone else for a while. They are still finishing up everything with the Cingular/AT&T Wireless merger.

It's for the liscenses. Nextel has a much better frequency for the time being (FCC will soon change this, it interferes with emergency services) that can penetrat buildings a lot better. And even if they will have to change all their liscenses due to the FCC, being able to use some of Sprints PCS liscences will let them survive during the switch. So when they do get their new liscenses, they will then be able to cover a lot more area, putting them in in a close 3rd from verizon, and possibly overtaking them in customer share. At least this is what I've heard (and what I've known Nextel to do with liscenses in the past).

T-Mobile does not have bad reception! I havent traveled to rural areas (and probably never/barely will) but everywhere i HAVE been they have had just as good as service as Cingular. Have you ever tried T-Mobile, or do you hear from other people. I know a couple people with sprint, and its always dropping the call!

Nextel is supposed to ditch iden too and go back to cdma.

Yeah, I also heard this from the same person. Maybe they got it confused and thought they were merging with Sprint/Nextel?
