Win2000 : Boot Fail : No Paging File

Windows 2000 / SP4

I have a new hard disk. I wish to snapshot my C: partition as a backup, should disaster strike. Using Ghost 2002, I can do a Partition to Partition copy

Copy process seems to work, However when testing if it all works,

the New disk doesn't boot all the way into Windows.

It asks me username/pasword etc

but responds with "loading personal settings"

then "System has no paging file or paging file too small"

I could fix/correct this if I could get windows to function

but it just loops me back to the username/password prompt

Boot with 2k/XP CD, go to console mode and delete pagefile.sys from your drives (Check C, D, etc.)

Restart Windows, that should clear it up - most likely the pagefile is corrupt instead of missing and Windows will re-create it upon next start.

this error also occurs when the boot record changes.

sounds like the active partition isnt set. you could try booting off a dos boot disk and typing FDISK and following the prompts to set the partition active.

I forgot to mention that the drive was set to "Active"

so it wasn't that. :-(

but how do you boot into Console mode!!! :-(

It sounds really useful

However :-)

My problem is now solved.

I found that if you use FDISK with the undocumented feature /MBR

it resets the master boot record & whayy hay... Problem solved.

I would still like to know how to boot into console mode

as I just kept going round in a loop earlier and it sounds like a good thing to know.

If you have access to a Windows XP CD, you can enter Console mode by booting the CD and pressing C during one of the first installation screens.

On Windows 2000 you can enter the console mode by going a few steps further, where it will ask if you wish to reinstall on top of the existing 2k or repair it with console.
