Networking problems w/ DSL and hub

Recommended Posts

Okay recently our ISP, Qwest, merged with MSN.

Therefore we got an MSN DSL modem in the mail.

Now, before, with the Cisco 675 DSL modem, I just plugged it into the uplink on our network hub, plugged the other computers in the house into the other ports, and everything worked fine- internet on all 3 computers.

Now, however, with this new modem (NetDSL 800) I can only use one computer connected to the hub at a time. If I connect another computer it says "network error, IP conflict" or something very similar. If I try to renew the IP on whatever computer isn't working, it just hangs for a while then says there was an error renewing the IP.

Any ideas on how to get all the computers to work on the hub?

Keep in mind I'm not very well versed in this area, so the simplest answer possible would be good :)

Nope same exact hub, and I agree that it doesnt' seem to be assigning seperate IPs.

I don't know anything about DSL, but, maybe you check the DHCP setting under your network. I know a router automatically does this for you and you have to disable it under yor network settings. Maybe you can make sure it is enabled??

Hope this helps

Um so is DHCP supposed to be on or off???

a hub is not a router, its a hub. it just transfers data, it has no real brain besides determining where the info is to go.

on the rare times you can plug a dsl or cable modem into uplink, its a fluke with the way the isp's network is set up. if it does not work now you cant do anything about it.

options open. buy a second NIC and then use your computer as a router, for the other computers. or buy a router. option 1 is best costs like 10 bucks. (CDN)

anywho, sorry to tell you the bad news

I used to be on cogeco @home and i could share with just a hub, then i moved back to Ottawa with rogers@home and no more hub share, DHCP (dynamic host config protocol) gives each computer a unique ip addr. each computer must have a unique ip. the sharing of the net with a uplink port on a hub is just luck given the isps config. by all technical means it should not work, but it does :)/... sometimes.

you dont have to have dhcp id you dont want to, you could set ip for each computer if you wanted to, but dhcp makes it easier, and he is right the only way the "uplink-hub" works is if dhcp is enabled, that way you get your ip from a dsl server.

again, 10 buck and 5 mins solves the entire problem

the uplink port is for upgrading your hub. say you have a 4 port hub and get a 5 or 6 comp, you dont need to buy a new 8 port, you can buy another 4 port and plug it into the uplink port and it acts as a 8 port, more or less.

hubs are chain-able by using the uplink port. if someone knows a way to make any connection work over uplink PLEASE PLEASE tell me!!

ok so you choose a "host" computer, say yours, this computer must be on for the others to use the internet. in that computer there are to network cards. 1 connects to the dsl modem, the other connects to the hub in a normal jack. all the others connect to the hub like normal. then in xp go to the network properties box and tick "share connection" for the dsl network card. a little salt for flavor stir, mix garnish with lime. ta-da

Thanks, that's about what I figured you would have to do... I've messed around with sharing a dial up connection the same way.

    • Black Myth: Wukong hits Xbox this August, exactly a year after PlayStation launch by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Developer Game Science delivered one of the biggest action games of all time last year, with Black Myth: Wukong going on to sell tens of millions in its launch month and winning a multitude of awards. However, the title skipped out on a platform it was originally announced to launch in: Xbox. Following a long string of reasons and delays, it seems the port is finally coming to the platform. Today, Game Science announced that the Xbox Series X|S version of Black Myth: Wukong now has a release date, with it landing on August 20, 2025. Pre-orders for the title will become available starting June 18. Interestingly, this Xbox release date is set exactly one year after the original release on PlayStation 5 and PC. Game Science originally stated that the delay was due to technical issues with Xbox consoles. However, Microsoft refuted that claim quickly and alluded that the delay was due to some sort of console exclusivity deal between Game Science and Sony. In today's announcement, Game Science once again says that the delay was due to its work on porting the game to Xbox and meeting its quality standards. "Bringing Black Myth: Wukong to Xbox Series X|S—and ensuring the experience met our internal quality standards—was no easy feat," said the studio today regarding the long delay on Xbox platforms. "Fortunately, we were able to complete this challenging task smoothly within the first year of the game's official release." "If you're an Xbox player who hasn't yet experienced the game on another platform, we're confident it will stand among the finest ARPGs available on Xbox," added Game Science. For those looking to jump into the game a little cheaper than usual, Game Science will be hosting Black Myth: Wukong's first-ever sale on June 18. The 20% off discount will be available across PC, PlayStation, and even the Microsoft Store for the Xbox Series X|S pre-order.
    • And where is "don't be evil"? Oh, yeah, they removed it, too.
    • YouTube isn't a monopoly, it's just the most popular video platform, but other options and competitors do exist. And I'm not defending YouTube here, I'm a subscriber to Geerling's channel and I like his content and YouTube clearly went too far with this, but they can't be considered a monopoly, IMO. https://www.captions.ai/blog-post/youtube-alternatives
    • Harmful to them because it affects their business. *Sigh*
