Mandrake 8.1 Install

Recommended Posts

I just downloaded 2 cd's for mandrake 8.1, burned then on cdrw's and started stup, then came this annoying little messagebox. This is not only for vmware, but it also happens when I do a normal setup via boot disc. If anybody else had this problem or knows a solution, please post it!

Here's the exact procedure to get that Yamaha sound card to work:

Check to see if the Linux kernel source has been loaded on your system:

# ls /usr/src/linux

(if /usr/src/linux does NOT exist, you need to install the linux kernel source)

Obtain these source packages from http://www.alsa-project.org , downloading the files to /usr/src:

ALSA driver

ALSA library

ALSA utilities

Install the source packages in /usr/src (this example assumes ALSA version 0.5.10; your details may vary):

# cd /usr/src

# tar xvfI alsa-driver-0.5.10b.tar.bz2

. . .

# tar xvfI alsa-lib-0.5.10b.tar.bz2

. . .

# tar xvfI alsa-utils-0.5.10.tar.bz2

. . .

Build and install the drivers:

# cd /usr/src/alsa-driver*

# ./configure

. . .

# make

. . .

# make install

Build and install the libraries:

# cd /usr/src/alsa-lib*

# ./configure

. . .

# make

. . .

# make install

Build and install the drivers:

# cd /usr/src/alsa-utils*

# ./configure

. . .

# make

. . .

# make install

Make your devices:

# cd /usr/src/alsa-driver*

# ./snddevices

. . .

Load the kernel modules:

# modprobe snd-card-ymfpci

# modprobe snd-pcm-oss

# modprobe snd-mixer-oss

Check to see if all the modules loaded:

# lsmod

Module Size Used by

snd-pcm-oss 16460 0

snd-pcm-plugin 14248 0 [snd-pcm-oss]

snd-mixer-oss 3924 0 [snd-pcm-oss]

snd-card-ymfpci 4080 0 (autoclean)

snd-ymfpci 34172 0 (autoclean) [snd-card-ymfpci]

snd-pcm 29464 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm-plugin snd-ymfpci]

snd-ac97-codec 23616 0 (autoclean) [snd-ymfpci]

snd-mixer 23356 0 (autoclean) [snd-mixer-oss snd-ymfpci snd-ac97-codec]

snd-opl3 4264 0 (autoclean) [snd-card-ymfpci]

snd-timer 8096 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm snd-opl3]

snd-hwdep 2956 0 (autoclean) [snd-opl3]

snd-mpu401-uart 2296 0 (autoclean) [snd-card-ymfpci]

snd-rawmidi 9432 0 (autoclean) [snd-mpu401-uart]

snd-seq-device 3652 0 (autoclean) [snd-rawmidi]

snd 35820 1 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm-plugin snd-mixer-oss snd-card-ymfpci snd-ymfpci snd-pcm snd-ac97-codec snd-mixer snd-opl3 snd-timer snd-hwdep snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]

soundcore 2596 6 (autoclean) [snd]

. . .

Append the following to /etc/modules.conf:

alias char-major-14 soundcore

alias char-major-116 snd

alias snd-card-0 snd-card-ymfpci

alias snd-slot-0 snd-card-0

Set the volume:

# /usr/bin/amixer set Master 50% unmute

# /usr/bin/amixer set PCM 50% unmute

Play a sample:

# /usr/bin/play /usr/share/sounds/phone.wav

Append the following to the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

echo "Initializing sound system..."

/usr/bin/amixer set Master 50 unmute 2>/dev/null >/dev/null

/usr/bin/amixer set PCM 50 unmute 2>/dev/null >/dev/null

/usr/bin/amixer set CD 50 unmute 2>/dev/null >/dev/null

modprobe snd-card-ymfpci 2>/dev/null >/dev/null

modprobe snd-pcm-oss 2>/dev/null >/dev/null

modprobe snd-mixer-oss 2>/dev/null >/dev/null

Reboot to test everything

Ciao...

I cant compile it because it says something about declaring a header and stops at error[1]
Do you have compiler installed? I'll look over ALSA's site and see what exactly you need to compile ALSA... :)

EDIT: I've looked over, and ALSA DO NOT require any other library. BUT you must compile and install the ALSA Libs package before you can compile and install the driver package.

NOTE: ALSA came with 3 package, driver, lib, and util. The util package is not needed to be compile and install. :)

Oh, by the way, 2.4 kernel has built-in yamaha DS-XG support driver. It's based on ALSA's driver. To enable this, you must recompile kernel, that's not something hard, the module name is ymfpci, try enable it as module and recompile your kernel if you don't luck with ALSA. :D

modprobe: Can't locate module card-ymfpci

[root@localhost alsa-driver-0.9.0beta8]# modprobe snd-pcm-oss

modprobe: Can't locate module snd-pcm-oss

[root@localhost alsa-driver-0.9.0beta8]# modprobe snd-mixer-oss

Yes im pretty sure, when I try to compile the library it gives me this error:

checking for hsearch_r... yes

checking for alsa-driver package... not found or wrong version

configure: error: Install alsa-driver v0.9.0 package first...

But i cant compile the library because:

/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:1:2: #error Modules should never use kernel-headers system headers,

/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:2:2: #error but headers from an appropriate kernel-source

make[1]: *** [sound.o] Error 1

make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/alsa-driver-0.9.0beta8a/kernel'

make: *** [compile] Error 1

btw, When i first install Linux i hear a buzzing sound and some sound coming out of the speakers.

configure: error: Install alsa-driver v0.9.0 package first...

That is error given when you try ./configure the lib package right?

If so, it's because ./configure can't find the driver package. So what I've said earlier about compiling the lib first is wrong. Try compile and install driver package first then come back to lib. Sorry.

Now, according to you previous post you can't compile the driver package because it has given you this error

/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:1:2: #error Modules should never use kernel-headers system headers,

/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:2:2: #error but headers from an appropriate kernel-source

Personally I don't know what it means, but I'll check it out and see what I can come up with. Until then, please try read the guide (see my previous post, the one with links ;))I've post and start over if haven't already done it. G'luck :D

    • Or use Epic games and get full games for free. lol Steam and their demos. Thankfully there’s competition
    • Maybe I missed it, but does this say anywhere that the game save bug has been squashed? I haven't encountered it myself, but it would be nice to know I'm good to go. Anyway, amazingly well done game. Mostly more of the same. ...but when the same is best in class with improved graphics and features, then a win.
    • Well when your game flops, you should expect this. If I do bad at work, I would expect a layoff. Less than 1600 people played it on steam. https://steamdb.info/app/1934570/charts/
