DSL modem's internal IP is 10.0.0.1, and my system's IP is 10.0.0.2, all of which are assigned via DHCP. I use WinXP. Modem = Cisco 678

After @home went under I had to use AOl until my local cable company got a system back up, which is a whole other story! As a beta tester I got a free connection to DSL through my local phone company. The DSL was great compaired to a dialup, but only worked several hours a day and the variation in quality and speed were unbelievable.

My wife is connected to the same DSL system in the next town and it is almost as quick and reliable as my current cable connection, but cost more from the same provider. What I learned from DSL is that even though my cable company's attitude towards the consumer leaves something to be desired at least they are consistent in the quality of service. With DSL you never know if something is wrong with your ISP, your connection, the site you are trying to reach or if DSL is just having a bad hair day!

Best advice I can give, if everything checks out technically, than be an informed consumer and make it tougher for your provider not to solve your problem than to let it continue. After trying the nice, "please help me attitude", for a reasonable time copy them with complaint letters to your State Consumer Protection Agency, the Attorney General of your state and any other agency that regulates them in your state. Than keep following up until the issue is resolved to your satisfaction.

Again, don't be a crank, try the nice approch first, than nail them to the cross.
