WMP10 Advantages

To be honest, I don't think it has any advantages over other players. It's more style than substance.

I prefer Music Match 7.5's interface and functionality better for audio, though WMP is fine for video clips I guess. I actually prefer WMP 9 to WMP 10 though. Seems to run better for me.

I'm a hardcore fan of the iZotope Ozone DSP plugin so I use WMP 10 for my music. It has great library functionality and has been rock-solid so far.

That said, the most flexible player I've seen BY FAR is jetAudio 6. It has absolutely fantastic video functions and supports a ton of formats (59 to WMP's 32), including QuickTime and RealMedia. It does the best job I've seen so far of being a truly universal player.

So, I now use jetAudio for video/DVD and WMP 10 for audio. But I'd use jetAudio for everything if it supported Ozone.

Here's a composite of jetAudio in various modes. Please note the following:

1. The main window can be displayed as a top or bottom bar, or sent to the systray.

2. The video and playlist windows can be displayed independantly, and have the most-used commands built into the window.

3. The video window can be drastically shrunk, allowing a "thumbnail" of the movie while I'm working.

My only complaint is the cyan background color, but it's easily fixed by modding the skin's xml file.

From those shots it looks like WMP ain't all bad, even at stock. Just a little wacky on the organization / interface side, I guess. Still, I do prefer dedicated alternatives for music files, and I use Explorer or PowerDesk to launch WMV's and activate WMP. I use WinDVD to play my DVD's and much prefer it for those.

Nice to have options. :)

BTW, thanks for the screen shots. It's cool of you to take the time.

Here's one I took:

Simple, but just not quite the same. The tree thing somehow doesn't seem to work well for me, and the duplication in categorization, varying column settings, etc. seems a bit over-done. For it's default config, I guess I would like to see something simpler, more efficient, etc. Like Music Match 7.5, I guess. Maybe it's just what I'm used to, at least that might be part of it, but I do think WMP has a ways to go in terms of interface design.

As with all things in Windows, I wish that Active Scripting was NOT part of the picture for full application support. I don't want it in OE 6, I don't want it in WMP, in fact, I wish it was solely limited to the IE browser and would not work with the OS at all, for a clear separation. But that's another story. :p
