Different files in Quick time

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm having a problem with quicktime. it won't read .avi and .mpg files, so far, but im sure there's more types of files that it can't read. I remember trying to read a .avi file and it said it doesnt support it and send me to some page with loads of useless patches to download. is anyone able to post links to correct patches to make quicktime support more files?

thanks.

www.divx.com there's the divx component for Mac. With that you're set!

Shodan is right, the .avi file you tried to play was most likely using the DivX codec. The .mpg file may have been MPEG2, which requires an add-on from Apple to play (which costs money). You could simply use VLC for either of those though.

iMovie (and pretty much all of Apple's media software) use the same codecs as QuickTime. QuickTime is the multimedia framework for OS X, just as Windows Media is the framework for Windows. If QuickTime doesn't support it, neither will iTunes, iMovie, etc. QuickTime Player is just a front end for the QuickTime libraries.
