How to get low ping in CS Source

Recommended Posts

the lowest ping I've ever get was 90, I have an ADSL 256/64 speed.

my pc has:

2.6G Intel

1 GB RAM

Nvidia Fx5200 with 128 RAM

I feel that I can turn up CS to give me a ping like 60 or 50... what shall I do??

any tips will be highly appreciated.

P.S.... how to take a screen shot in CS source?

Don't do anything that uses the internet whilst playing cs, upgrading your computer won't help.

I never run any thing just the game.

Your ping depends of your connection quality, and the server you're playing.

Try changing your cl_updaterate, cl_cmdrate.

Edit your config.cfg and add a line like this :

bind "F12" "screenshot"

so what kind of values do you recommend for the above commands?

I will try that F12, many thanks :)

Guys, his connection just fine. He just need to improve first his FPS in game, to get a better ping.

I just don't see how that card can deliver nicer FPS in DirectX game.

Yes PukiMan, everyone tells me that, but I need to know how... my fps reaches 50's but during the play it goes down to 20-30's......

I need some commands to try tuning it up...

Ping and FPS are two very different things peeps.

Some people ere seem to have merged them together.

but in-game ping is related to fps - lower fps, the game engine can't reply as fast to pings (generalising here, some engines have their own way of calculating "ping" based on actual command packets)

either way it creates LAGGGGG :p

Ping is the time it takes for your computer to kind of reply to the server, the server will send a message and your computer will respond. The time it takes is your ping. This depends on your internet connection and the servers position etc.

FPS (Frames per second) is how many frames your screen shows per second, this relies on your graphics card mostly but other system components too.

'Fps' are the frames per second that your system is managing to run whatever game your playing, online, offline, it doesn't matter.

It has nothing to do with the internet in any way, and is directly related to your Cpu, Gfx card, Ram etc, basically your systems ability to run the game.

Ping is the speed at which your computer sends and recieves packets of infomation from the server your playing on. Entirely internet based. Usually the better your connection: the better your ping.

I don't know the text book definition of 'ping' but im sure if you goolge it you'll find out, if you want.

dont tell him to upgrade his computer if he is complaining about the ping, not the fps. hardware affects the fps, not ping in anyway.

i tried playing source with my 1800+, 512mb, fx5200 card and i got like 10 fps lol. it was sad, but because i've got a great connection (road runner), i still got like 20 for my ping. so dont tell him to upgrade when it wont do ****. its his conenction thats making it.

90 isn't bad either, its when u get to like 150+, thats when i would start worrying.

First things first, take CS out of the equation, find your target server and ping it from a command prompt (most are set to reply, some won't), then compare this ping to the one you get in game, if it's close, it's your connection, if it's not, it's CS. If this ping is really high, you're not going to get a good ping in CS

Most important thing I've found in terms of ping (aside from connection) is the 'rate' command, this sets the amount of data you can send/recieve per second. If you're connections good, you want it set to 20000, NEVER go higher than that, you'll just choke your connection/the servers connection, or at least use more bandwidth for no purpose. You can get your current rate setting by opening the console and just typing 'rate' and pressing enter. If your worrying about your connection i'd set it to 10000, that seems to be the best tradeoff.

Also, I know everyone debating this, if you've got a low fps (<20) this can affect your ping, as the PC will be busy doing everything, I'd lower your settings a little. till you get something playable, then you can afford to start putting more processor time into data packets (I know this isn't the greatest explanation, in fact from reading it, it makes little sense, but I hope the points come across)

Dude, you gonna get 999 ping while running the game on 1FPS.

You don't see it, but it's related.

Funny, I cranked up Doom 3 to 1600x1200 4xAA/AF one time, and got around 2 or 3fps, my ping was still 20ms on most servers. Went back to 1024x768 medium settings, FPS went up to around 40 or 50, ping was still 20

ping does NOT equal FPS or visa versa.

exactly. it is normally dependant on your ISP, distance to the server you're playing on, and some command rate variables.

biggest thing is distance to server, which is something you can control. pick servers that are closer.

cs:s requires very little bandwidth, but good latency with your ISP -- unfortunately you can't control that.

i Have prett much the same kinda system as u except 512 mb ram and my fx5200 is 256mb. cc:s plays fine for my

iam not actually too sure how fast my connection is i can download stuff at about 105kb/s at best.. so what ever that is, my ping is usually between 30 and 50.

try fixin your rates, i can't remeber what they the commands are though

also try using this command

cl_smooth 0

I've tried playing with cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate which made my ping reachs max of 110 and actually it became 90 most of the time.

I guess I will try rate command (Thanks McSmiggins for the post, it really helpfull) and see the results. I've always picked the closer servers, actually I have a server that uses the same ISP provider as mine, but my ping is still around 120-90, but I feel that I can reach 60 or even less, I have a feeling for this.

120-90 is not that bad actually, I can get kills up to 50 per map, but I guess with lower ping I can get higher kills, I need to please the devil inside me :D

I will for sure change my Graphics card soon, this will boost my fps. I will try 'rate' tonight and will update you....

many thanks all

    • Meta's next chatbot might message you first and want to keep talking to you by Usama Jawad Original robot image designed by Freepik Chatbots have been on the rise ever since the meteoric rise of ChatGPT back in January 2023. While large language models (LLMs), the technology powering chatbots, has various other use-cases, one of the most popular scenario for AI involvement continues to be chatbots. Now, it appears that Meta is considering making AI assistants even more proactive and talkative in future iterations. Leaked documents seen by Business Insider indicates that Meta is training AI chatbots that can message you unprompted to bring up past topics. Internally, the initiative is known as "Project Omni", and its aim is to increase user retention and engagement by providing more value to customers. Examples of proactive messages from the chatbot include an inquiry into your discovery of any new music composers, or checking if you require any movie recommendations for the night. A Meta spokesperson confirmed these plans to the news outlet, saying that "Like many companies, we're testing follow-up messaging with AIs in Meta's AI Studio. After you initiate a conversation, AIs in Meta AI Studio can follow up with you to share ideas or ask additional questions. This allows you to continue exploring topics of interest and engage in more meaningful conversations with the AIs across our apps." Contractors from data labeling firm Alignerr are reportedly helping Meta build different personas that can interact with the user. Once these capabilities become generally available in AI Studio, they will allow customers to create personalized chatbots that are specialized in particular areas, such as responding to fan messages across Meta's social media networks. It is important to note that this project is in active development, but an Alignerr contractor noted that it's been given to them as a "long-term project". The Meta spokesperson specified that follow-up messages to a conversation will only be sent on threads originally initiated by the user. If the user does not respond to this follow-up, no other messages will be sent. Follow-ups will be sent within 14 days of the original message and in order to be eligible, you have to have sent at least five messages to the chatbot in the previous two weeks. Other guidelines in the requirements document emphasize the need for the follow-up conversation to be positive, personalized, avoid harmful or sensitive content, and refer to something concrete from previous conversations. It will be interesting to see if this new way of interaction with AI chatbots changes the way we engage with them.
    • It would make more sense to do that, but instead it looks like he wants the batch script to display a message telling him to manually enable the VPN rather than getting the batch script to connect it for him.
