In the rules it states that when a player lands on free parking, they are supposed to get nothing.

But I'm finding out that people play the game differently. Some people have a $500 bill sitting in the middle of the board, and when someone lands on Free Parking, they get it, and it is replaced for the next person who lands on free parking.

Some players do the above, and also add all taxes and fines from Luxury Tax, Income Tax, Chance fines, and Community Chest fines to the pot.

If you've heard of any other variations, post them!

Official Monopoly Rules:

Free Parking:

A player landing on this place does not receive any money, property or reward of any kind.

This is just a "free" resting-place.

From the rules....

Free Parking Jackpot

Rule: $500 is placed in the middle of the board at the start of the game. Any time a player must pay a fine or tax the money also is put in the middle of the board. Whenever a player lands on Free Parking, he or she gets the money in the middle.

Clarifications: The $500 is not replaced after the jackpot is first taken. It is only for the first lucky player to land there.

What streets do you have in the American version of monopoly? It seems they give you $'s too instead of ?'s.

The Wikipedia artcile has an HTML board that uses the North American street names & dollar prices:

Thats wrong. There is never supposed to be any money the middle. All fines/taxes go to bank. Adding money in there and letting people get it only makes the game last longer. Ive actually read a book about monopoly rules/backstory/startegies, and believe there should be no money in the middle at any point. The top post has the correct rules.

While I am an avid boardgame player, I have not played Monopoly in many, many years. However, when I did we always started with $500 in the center and then added all fines and taxes to it to be picked up by players landing on Free Parking.

That's the way I use to played it.

The Wikipedia article addresses the this issue, it states that there are two sets of rules:

Official Rules

House Rules

House rules seems to be where there are those rules that make the game last longer.

I personally enjoy long, drawn out, 4 day long Monopoly feuds!

I've always played it with $500 in the middle and all the fines/taxes go into the pile throughout the game. But other people play it differently. I know that I play Risk differently than others, so it was a little difficult to adjust at school.

    • Lol are you mad because I'm not using AI? I'd rather pay people than lose a bunch of potential customers and get humilated because I used AI. A lot of people won't purchase a game if it used AI during development.
