We put taxes and fines in the middle for free parking. We also auction off any landed property that isn't bought by the player who landed on it.

Man, we've made so many Mod rules. We've sold hotel discount ($500, and you get 25% off of all hotel bills from the person you buy it from).

I've always played it with taxes and fines going to the bank. Free parking is just a "free" spot, nothing given nor taken. No money ever rests in the middle of the board.

I am not basing this upon the rules, just how I was taught to play.

Free Parking:

Every Tax you pay, every fine from the Chances and Chests goes underneath the Free Parking and Who ever Lands on It, Gets the Money..

Thats How i play it.

But other peoplel Play Diffrent Rules

Thats wrong.  There is never supposed to be any money the middle.  All fines/taxes go to bank.  Adding money in there and letting people get it only makes the game last longer.  Ive actually read a book about monopoly rules/backstory/startegies, and believe there should be no money in the middle at any point.  The top post has the correct rules.

Exactly. The way I have always played it - Free parking is free parking. A safe spot. Taxes, fees and all that go to the bank.

This very topic defines why Monopoly was and still is so popular.

If you buy more than one version of the Monopoly series (My father collects them), you will notice that some of the official rules varied from version to version. This allowed the game to be used in manners that other board games could only imagine, and to grow with the age / interests of the audience.

Whether you like it or not, House Rules are covered under the official rule set; therefore, there is no wrong way to play monopoly...

Just played it a couple of nights ago. Officially, "Free Parking" is a place to rest. Nothing happens to you there, no money, no reward.

However, if you agree upon "House Rules" before hand, you can make it whatever you want. If that's the case, a lot of people put all fines and penalties into the center of the board, and use that as a reward for landing on "Free Parking".

The South African version that we have in our house has the following rule as concerns "Free Parking"

LANDING ON FREE PARKING:

"When, in the ordinary course of play, a player's token reaches this space, the Player receives no benefit nor incurs any penalty, and moves ahead in the usual manner on his next turn"

:)

Depends on the mood of the players. If we are all bored out of our minds and are playing monopoly to waste time, $500 in the middle plus taxes and fines. If we are playing seriously, for bragging rights, then the free parking square is nothing more than a safe spot to land.

    • Remarkably based article from Garter - apparently there IS someone working there that actually understands mainframe systems.
