How to Remove Outlook Express Shortcut

Recommended Posts

Hello guys,

I hope you don't mind me asking this question. I have searched on google for ages and been reading the forums all morning.

I have installed a new 2003 terminal server and can't seem to hide the following shortcut icons for when my users login :-

start menu > programs > outlook express

start menu > programs > accessories > address book

start menu > programs > accessories > entertainment > media player

I have deleted the shortcuts in the default user and all users folders but they still come back. I tried on search on technet and ms newsgroups but nothing came up.

Surely one of you guys has the answer ;-)

THANKS ALOT,

Glen.

  • Create a share on the network, for which your users have read-only access, .e.g \\SERVER\StartMenus\TerminalServers
  • Copy the required icons to this menu, this folder should contain the Programs folder and then icons in Programs folder that you want users to see
  • Implement a loop-back Group Policy on your Terminal Servers OU that redirect's the users Start menu to the network location. A loop-back policy only takes effect when a users logs on to those computers. Use Merge not Replace in the Loopback option.
  • Hide the Common programs group in the Group Policy as well

If you need help with this we can point you in the right direction, but have a look around the Group Policies first.

Sounded good until I realised we also have another 2003 terminal server which is working fine.

I guess you wanted me to look at the policies in active directory which will obviously be ok.

It must be something on the actual server itself

any help is MUCH appreciated.

thanks alot mate,

Glen.

These icons are placed in the user's profile rather than the All Users Start menu. I have seen, that in most cases when a user logs on and gets a new profile that these icons are placed back in the profile, however I've not done any troubleshooting as I have always redirected Start Menus in a Terminal Server environment. That way I have more control over what icons users see when logged onto the server.

  • 2 weeks later...

This helps:

Rename/Delete the following two keys:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}\StubPath

("%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\setup50.exe" /APP:OE /CALLER:WINNT /user /install)

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{7790769C-0471-11D2-AF11-00C04FA35D02}\StubPath

("%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\setup50.exe" /APP:WAB /CALLER:WINNT /user /install)

The "just-in-time" setup executes these Stubs right after a new profile is created.

This works great for the start menu items, but doen't seem to work for the "pinned" items on the start page. However forcing the classic start menu from group policy resolves that;-)

    • I'm not sure about that, but it at least "does" a version of 7.1 that this brand new card doesn't....

    • I can barely recall getting web results from a file search... I must've turned it off long ago. 26H2 is Insider's Preview build 26300.8697, which I am running, atm. It is not available for people running the standard commercial builds of Windows--only for the beta test Insider's group. But anyway, as mentioned in the thread, this feature has been around for a long time...
    • Speak for yourself. I saw it on Feedly, came here to read it, and did read it until the steps to activate. I skipped them to read the last paragraph. I knew it was probably not "the most requested feature", but knowing Neowin, I knew the article was going to talk about a feature nonetheless. I've seen Neowin in its best and worst.
    • See if this article I wrote the other day works for you.
