SUSE Linux 8.0

Instructions how to do a ftp install are here;

http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/lmuelle_sus...x_internet.html

This is like every other linux distro out there - that allows for an ftp install. In a nutshell, create a boot disk from a downloaded image using rawrite, etc.. If needed may need to install some mods so that you have network connection.

Point it to the ftp server where files are located, install. This ftp server could be on your local lan, if you download all the files, etc.. I would suggest use mirror, to insure you have exact copy, etc....

If doing from a remote FTP server - having a high speed connection is kind of a given ;)

They state that they do not provide ISO images for Intel platform (notice the non-);

We are currently providing ISO images for download for most of non-Intel/AMD/PPC platforms (IA64, S/390 and Sparc), since these products cannot be made available everywhere, worldwide and at the accustomed speed.

They do have ISO images of eval for intel - I think this is bootable CD OS, to give you feel of what SUSE can do - without making any changes to your current system, etc.. Not 100% sure

Hope this helps,

Not sure why - OpenBSD does the same kind of thing, you can do a ftp install. But if you want CD, you have to buy copy ;)

They are not expensive, helps them pay for development - etc..

Now - if your running Sparc, your all set

FTP directory /pub/suse/sparc/current/iso/ at ftp.suse.com

I would guess someone could put up a ISO copy of the CD they bought - but this might not be 100% legal??

Anyway - if interested in installing it, ftp works just fine - just not as fast, and or as portable as a CD ;)

Let us know how it works out - I have never been a big Suse fan, oh its a fine distro - but I play more with redhat, freebsd, mandrake, slackware, etc.. Did not suse join the whole unitedlinux thing?

PS - I would think that the non-intel images will be out sometime - I see the 7.3 for sparc, and 7.2 for IA64, the s390 iso version didnt pop out at me.

So to install SuSE 8.0 from a local FTP, i make an FTP server on my other computer. Now, for the home dir of the FTP, do i make it /pub, and make the whole dir structure like on their ftp(/pub/suse/suse/i386/8.0 ?) or do i just set the home dir in the folder with all the downloaded files/directories?

If i am using a local ftp, do i have to make other disks with the modules for the network connections, etc?

Thanks!
