Hiphop, Rap has destroyed Music

Recommended Posts

I will recognize that I'm a minority here, but I can't consider Rap/Hip hop music at all, so until it becomes even more pervasive, it cannot "destroy music" because real music still exists.  I consider people like Beethoven, Hans Zimmer, and John Williams great musicians.  Calling rap and hip hop music is about the biggest slap in the face to music you could give it.  People talk.  That's not music.  You take that out, you get repetitive beats and junk that should not even be justified to be called music.  It has more in common with a poem than it does with music.  I think the recent resugence of the symphony in movies is one of the best things to happen to music in these times.  Maybe I'll get pummeled for saying this stuff, but I can't help it if I like music that is good enough to last tens to hundreds of years as opposed to music that lasts a year or two.

Though I cant argue at in the least with what you say, because I appreciate classical music as well, you cant say something isnt music because its 'repetitive', because if you do that, then you are saying that classical isnt music either (dont try and argue with that, if there isnt any degree of repetition its not music, its noise). Rap doesnt talk, for god sake, they 'rap', durrr. Yes it is closer to poetry, but all lyrics are poetic in form, hence 'lyric poetry'. Atleast in rap they rhyme, which is hella more than most rock/pop artists can do.

just FYI, There are still those of us who listen to hip-hop from the 80s. Though they may be as few and far between as people who dig deep to get their paws on classical from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Hmph, well I guess so ;)

I only listened to hiphop and rap when hiphop was just music aka electro, breakbeat & rap was fun not gangster eg Grandmaster Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel Run DMC. & dont even get me started on R&B There is no rhythm with todays variation of it & certainly not any blues. It's all bout the money!.

It's never agreed with me in the 80's, 90's and present decade. Not for the guns, sex and violence bs people seem to always say but for the fact that the mood, feel, and sound seems to be rehashed by many artists.

I do on occasion give it many chances, but my being just doesnt accept it.

But still music is always to the eyes of the beholder.

Gotta disagree with the statement/opinion... it's true that the quality of rap/hip-hop hasn't been as good as the time when it was still on the verge of having mass-audience... and that, I think, is also the reason why rap/hip-hop became so popular, because the pioneers of the genre actually had stuffs to say, unlike today, where you can actually find only a few who have any relevant content in their lyrics... but there's a reason for that:

all the true artists want to hold true to their belief of what the genre should be... but that isn't the case when you add in the general public... the public has their preferences, and those with works that belong, they are able to sell records... those whose works don't belong, they're just trying to live another day like a lot of us... and then when you factor in all those agencies/companies that are responsible for the promotion of certain artists, rap/hip-hop itself isn't to blame at all...

for all those who think along the line of "rap is crap", please... why be so close-minded... been a member of the board for a while now (although I don't post much), alot of the members on the board dislike rap artists with passion, and I don't get it... ask any artists that's under your fav. genre regarding which artists write the best lyrics, more often than not, eminem will come up... and that's only one... not counting others yet, nas, jay-z, etc... and you should also give it a try once kanye west's new album, "late registration" comes out... it might just be leaps ahead of lots of other albums of many genres... and like in one of the earlier posts, why don't you try to give a live verse of free-style?

rap is art, it is music, it might just not be your idealogical form of music... if you don't like it, so be it, don't listen to it, don't buy any records, but why call it "crap"? or say that it "has destroyed music"? it doesn't represent the view of everybody...

Yet another thread bashing hip hop

I guess people can't stand it when their genre of music is at the bottom anad hip-hop is at the top. Let's face it guys, everyone has their own likes and dislikes and I happen to like hip-hop, or at least some of it.

This is the typical attitude and generalizations i've come to expect from many of the members around here.  You obviously know only what you see on MTV, which is a very small part of what is available out there.  Grow up, and do some actual thinking and research before you hit the post button.  Your comments are as ridiculous and brainwashed as if I had said that all metal music was about worshipping satan and was turning children into zombies so they would commit suicide. Or that all country music was about killing my wife and being sad because my dog died.

Well said.

OrangeSoul, you could quite possibly be the most ignorant person I have ever read comments from. First lets think a bit subjectively about this and be rationally adults. You are so absurdly biased. You make points about ALL rap music being about sex, drugs, and violence. THEN you say well most is. THEN when someone points out, that there are a fair share of other artists in a plethora of other genres that make music about the same subjects, your back up is. "Well rap has more of it and is 95% about sex, drugs, and violence". C?mon, how exactly ignorant can you be? That's like saying one serial killer is less insane than another because he killed less people. How moronic can one train of thought be? Killing is killing....Same rules apply with music, does it matter if one genre of music has more of the subjects that bring good music down? No matter what genre has a larger saturation of crappy subjects for their music, the fact of the matter is, they all have some. They all bring modern day music and the industry down the toilet. So instead of making and/or agreeing with broad ignorant statements about one genre of music; I have a novel idea. Let's just agree that no matter what genre of music, ALL artists who perpetuate lame music, with half hearted production quality, and stereotypical crappy mainstream (violence, sex, guns, drugs, etc...) are killing music and the industry. Not just one genre because it happens to have more people who get rich doing it.

Realistically speaking, all music has their fare share of crappy artists who play to the ignorance of the mainstream to make their millions. You're line of reasoning is just as ignorant as KKK members who say they hate all black people because they are violent. Their gripe isn't really with black people, it's with those black people who perpetuate the stereo types, but they are too ignorant to see that. On the same hand your gripe isn't with rap music, it's with MUSIC in general particularly mainstream that perpetuates crap and brings down the industry. Open your mind and actually think about what I just typed. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to disagree unless you are TRULY ignorant which I hope that you are not.

Good post, I totally agree... Hip hop is THE WORST music out there. I'd seriously listen to Country, Pop, Contemporary anything instead of it. Personally I'm a huge fan of bands such as:

Iron Maiden

Judas Priest

Metallica

Led Zeppelin

Deep Purple

The Doors

The Clash

Van Halen

Motley Crue

and those style bands. Now that is REAL music.

Haha, I have a question is this how you dress?

led-zeppelin-bio-2.jpg

Saying the you do not like a whole class of music is like me saying I hate rock music because of Jessica Simpson. You are classifying a genre based on what the record companies want you to hear. Just like the best rock music is underground, so is the best hip-hop. Also, if you don't know the difference between hip-hop and rap, then STFU. Rap= 50 cent Hip-Hop=Talib Kweli.

Well i would i agree most of the modern rap and hip hop music only talks about guns money and women, back in the day when hip hop was barely emerging, it was used as an outlet to relieve all the stress' in life due to the opression that was around. I know KRS-One preaches true Hip Hop and doesnt agree with the way these current artists talk about guns money violence etc. He has a whole site dedicated to what he thinks Hip Hop should be, and i would have to agree with him, demoralizing women and actions of violence doesnt seem right at all. But i guess for the most part people have their own taste in music, and you cant do nothing about it, so just deal with it.

I agree...in my opinion I believe that rap/hip-hop is the driving force behind most of the crimes in Toronto and other parts of the world. I know a lot of ppl are not going to agree with me on this one but here in Toronto the vast majority of ppl committing shootings do list to rap/hip-hop. I don?t see ppl that listen to rock music or classical or w/e going around shooting ppl in Toronto.

I can't speak for Toroto, but my thesis was about the media and crime. In it, I focused on the fact the violent crime in the US has been in a steady decline over the past 15 years, yet people believe there is more crime because of the media. You could say there is a correlation between the rise of rap and the decline of crime, though I do not think it is causal.

yeh but the music isnt the reason of the shooting its jus they want to listen to rap/hip hop. and slipknott have been blamed for influencing a lot of crimes.

when the hell did i try to act ghetto or tough i just told you to shut up theres nothing ghetto about that you idiot. and for the record that pictures from when iw as about 12 and im 15 now so i changed alot.

50 Cent would not be where he is without WHITE Suburban kids like some of you buying his albums. This boils down to a much deeper rift, the very rift that has existed since the slaves were brought over. Hip-Hop has its roots in Islam, while Rock comes from Christianity.

I dont really like hip-hop/rap at all either. But there probably is good rap/hip-hop out there, And yea everything you hear on MTV is ****. Just about half the stuff on the 'charts' are ****. Do yourself a favor and go discover music for yourself, dont sit around and let MTV tell you what good music is.

Furthermore about music inspiring violence. Thats just bull****, If your kid is using music as his influence to run out and shoot people or whatever then he deserves to be shot anyway. Violence in youths starts at home, its part of your upbringing, THATS what you should be blaming.

Ignorance is bliss. I suggest you open your eyes to the world of music before making any assumptions about one genre. I guess you watch too much tv and listen to the radio all the time.

Amen to that...

Some of the post in this topic are hilarious...

music = taste... still some people who can't seem to get this...

grow up and get over it

In the end it really comes down to what u really like, isnt that music? Of course i hate rap etc (Im a Metal Head), but everyone can say what they like it aint going to change anything.

586446188[/snapback]

Right on.  Criticizing people's music tastes is what causes people to jump on the "cool" music bandwagon anyways.  Listen to what you want and don't give a **** about what other people listen to.

    • The proportion (or number of iterations) has nothing to with this aspect of Copyright I am describing. In short, it doesn't matter how many times the manager tells you to change something or how. Your work product is always YOURS until and unless you then assign that to the person representing the client/company, usually for financial compensation -- either in salary or as a subcontract work for hire payment. if iterations determined copyright, then businesses would have learned to just keep making changes until they could claim they owned the copyright, without having to compensate the artist for their work. And that would be BAD. The only place where the amount of changes does have a role is in how much does a human modify a previous public domain work (from any source) before it is considered fair use or their own work, etc. For example, if a human makes substantial changes to a public domain (re: AI, by definition) work, then they can then claim that derivative work as their own...but NEVER the original version, of course. That's why anyone can make a movie about Dracula, for example, as long as it is based on the public domain novel, but not if they take new ideas from copyrighted movies made afterwards. As one of the people who personally advised the US Copyright Office on their recent ruling on these very issues, be assured that I specifically used the terminology precisely -- though I made it simple enough for laymen to understand it. If I made this confusing by doing so, I apologize. But, to be clear regarding your assumption that I would agree to your second statement that I quoted above -- the answer is NO. If AI does the work, no matter how much "direction" you give it, it cannot be copyrighted. All AI generated content is in the Public Domain and therefore the copyright cannot be assigned to ANYONE, even you -- until and unless substantial modifications are made to it BY A HUMAN BEING (yourself or a contracted artist/writer/etc.) and then that copyright on the derivative work is legally (in writing) transferred to you. This is a critical distinction. And it is important that people, especially AI sloppers, understand this. For example, YouTube is not paying AI slop generators for the copyright, etc. of their AI slop. What YouTube is doing is sharing AD REVENUE for permission to publish your AI slop. Copyright/ownership/rights never come into it. Importantly, that means that anyone can copy any AI slopware on YouTube, etc. and rehost it anywhere they want, even back on YouTube, and there is nothing legal that YouTube can do about it with regards to copyright protections, ownership, DMCA, etc. Anyone is legally free to use any AI slopware in any way they want. When this ruling was pending, I warned Disney legal of all of this before they did their OpenAI deal -- that it would literally dilute their entire IP portfolio forever. They ignored that warning for the PR and stock bump. But that is why, when the ruling came down last year, Disney quickly extricated themselves from that OpenAI deal, even eating the initial upfront fees -- followed closely by OpenAI ending their entire AI video generating business model. They adjusted their PR release dates to make this less obvious to shareholders, of course. Phew. I hope that this clears up the key distinctions for you and anyone reading. If you have any additional questions or even hypotheticals about AI and Copyright, please feel free to ask.

    • Owing to the nature of Windows feature enablement updates, it was distributed over Windows Update services as a complete system upgrade rather than as an ordinary cumulative update
    • Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2, urges IT admins to prepare for release by Usama Jawad Windows 11 typically follows an annual update cycle, but Microsoft recently broke that tradition a bit by releasing a "26H1" version in the first half of this year as a "scoped" build for select new silicon PCs only. This version was not available for customers using 24H2 and 25H2 builds, as Microsoft is busy preparing version 26H2 for them, confirmed officially for the first time. In a Windows IT Pro blog, Microsoft has urged IT admins to prepare for the upcoming release of Windows 11 version 26H2. The company has confirmed that this will be a small enablement package (eKB) that will simply light up certain disabled features that are already present in the operating system's code base. This means that the "refined" Windows update and deployment experience will be simpler and quicker, with minimal disruptions, as the feature update will simply toggle a few flags rather than performing a complete replacement. Microsoft has explained that this is all possible because the standard Windows 11 releases share the same servicing branch and hence, the same source code. However, this also means that Windows 11 26H1 users won't be able to upgrade to 26H2 as that is a different branch, but this is something we have known for a while now. Similar to previous annual feature updates, Windows 11 26H2 will offer the following support cycles: 24 months of support for Home, Pro, Pro EDU, and Pro for Workstations editions 36 months of support for Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise Multi-session editions Microsoft has not confirmed a concrete release date for Windows 11 26H2, but noted that it is "coming soon". If we go by the ongoing release cadence, we can expect it to begin rolling out in early October 2026. As such, IT admins have been encouraged to begin validating Windows Insider releases in the Experimental Channel, plan rollout rings, and strategize the utilization of their existing deployment tools.
