PlayStation 3 GPU Less Powerful than GeForce 7800

Recommended Posts

The Inquirer reports that an nVIDIA spokesperson was quoted in the magazine saying that the RSX GPU is basically a slightly less powerful GeForce 7800.

That means that almost a year before launch, there?s a PC graphics chip that is more powerful than the RSX GPU found in the PlayStation 3. And make no mistake, this is not a crazy, speculative conclusion ; this comes straight from the company that makes both parts: the RSX and GeForce 7800 graphics processing units.

That?s not good news for consoles, being that the typical 4-to-5 year lifecycle a console must survive allows computers to catch up quickly with the technology found on next-generation consoles.

the Xbox 360 hardware won?t be matched by PC until late 2006, when quad-core processors from AMD and Intel arrive and Windows Graphics Foundation 2.0-compliant GPUs, featuring unified shader architecture, arrive.

is this true? not even the most high-end PC system can match XBOX 360 hardware?

It can mach if you have them in SLI...

The technology used in the 360's GPU won't appear on the PC until the NEXT nVIDIA generation and the second next ATi generation. At least it's 100% sure it will be BETTER than PS3's GPU. But ofcourse the PC will catch on sooner than that in other tersm.

And Kurtagi(sp?) said that he wants the PS3 to have a 10 year life cycle, lol.  Itll be outdated in 1-2 years.

Yeah way to pull a Nintendo. They said they wanted the Gamecube to have a lifespan of 7 years. Almost there, but they were forced to cut that short due to other companies rushing to the next generation. It wont happen. 10 years is too long for today's technology.

look at the source...    :p

Hah touche...

meh, the xbox used a modified Geforce 3Go GPU, and it was still the most powerful console on the market. Dont be so suprised that PS3 is using dated tech, its cheaper and more affordable, not to mention a VAST majority of people dont even have a PC that can compare.

have what in SLI? What about the CPUs?

But... isn't it really about the quality and robust-ness of the games on each platform.

Yeah the PC will always trump consoles in hardware, but the PC also has games that are far more complicated and have more depth.

I've tried all of the consoles. The games seem so childish, simplistic and limited.

"...allows computers to catch up quickly with the technology found on next-generation consoles."

what are they talking about... pc graphics are already more advanced than the next-gen consoles. Far Cry, Doom 3, HL2, Riddick, SCCT... theyre all equal or better than whats coming out this year and next for consoles.

The game's may have better graphics, but the hardware in pc's is far from superior.

Those Games are almost a year old aready and still look better than anything offered on the yet-to-b-released consoles.

Let's then consider how far off the console's release dates are.

For you're information, almost all of the highly anticipated PC games were released for the XBOX console. Doom 3, Half Life 2, GTA: SA just to name a few. This same trend will follow with the 360. You're right though when you said PC will always trump consoles in terms of hardware but once 360 is released, it will be on top...for a few months.

PC ports to console are very poor compared to their PC counter-parts. The only one that I can actually think of that was decent was Quake III for Dreamcast, but then again it was lacking all the features that you could do with the PC version, just like with every other pc to console game.

This thread is useless, it is another anti-PS3 message brought to you by your friends at TeamXbox.

And what TeamXbox is supposed to have in common with this topic?

They find news from inaccurate sources on the web to directly fuel the Xbox fanclub who lives off that site, which then echos accross the internet with the creation of retarded threads. I would rather read this straight from the source then get it from some random forum poster named Red Cloak who doesn't provide the original source. Edited by jmole

If you read the Inquirer article, a footnote says the source link was originally omitted. TeamXbox probably read that article before the source link was added, so it's not like TeamXbox is trying to mislead anyone. We'll find out soon enough whether or not the PlayStation Magazine really contains that quote from an nVidia spokesperson.

Well if you trace the news back, the actual source is here.

So basicly, this entire story is based on what some guy name Red Cloak said on some forum.

And he quoted it from Playstation Magazine...

Direct quote from the latest PSM, an Nvidia spokesman is quoted with: "The GeForce 7800 is almost identical to the RSX, the rsx is only slightly less powerful."

Looks like all those 'off the shelf' rumors about the RSX are pretty much on the money.

dont wana sound all defensive for the ps3 or anything but id be keen to point out that the inquirer is the least reliable news available on the internet... infact usually what it writes is total rubbish made up of total speculation. also i know that nVidia wouldnt release a GPU on the ps3 below what is available almost a year before.

edit: sorry inq occasionally writes articles that not only make sense but are also true, but i believe more often than not they aren't.

And he quoted it from Playstation Magazine...

I am a random forum poster, I can make up quotes and make a claim that it came from an offical magazine without any proof.

Like just recently I read an interview in the September issue of Game Informer with J Allard:

John Smith:  So J, how powerful is the Xbox360 really?

J Allard: The Xbox360 is about as powerful as the PS2.  So Ken Kutagari was right when he said the Xbox360 is more like the Xbox 1.5.

Get my point? I don't get why some sites post offical news based of what someone says is a forum without getting it from the source, in this case Playstation Magazine.

    • Huh? I have an Aeron Remastered and the backrest cannot go up or down (only the lumbar is adjustable). Yes, the Doro C300 Pro V2's backrest can be locked, but the locking mechanism is so weak that when you recline and lean back the backrest moves with your body. I think the whole purpose of this chair is that all of the moving parts (except for the rocking, which can be locked in place) are supposed to move with your body, as you shift your weight, that's why I couldn't get used to it. Some people might like it though. Its redeeming factor is the price, I mean it costs like a quarter of what a new Herman MIller (Aeron) costs.
    • Well done Massie. This is how to treat the Fox News filth.
    • I notice how you dodged the questions I had about the racism shown by ignorant, gullible, cowardly people when the Poles, like your partner, were the immigrants. Ahem. I wonder how you'd feel if native born Brits suddenly treated you as "dirty crooked immigrant" for being half Trump-American? If they ordered you to leave and "go back to your corrupt country" (on the other side of the Atlantic), would you go? The truth is based on facts as supported by evidence. As requested in your previous posts, I have used the facts in your own post to show everyone the truth.
    • US citizens are paying to their government, who could use that to fund healthcare and tuition and relieve the costs of these for citizens instead of making tax breaks that overwhelmingly favor the rich. I'm not saying that tariffs are the correct solution, but what else would they be used for? What else could Trump have in mind for wanting them, if he hasn't figured out that labor costs are higher in the US?
