Please help! My clock runs fast!

Recommended Posts

Ok. this is about the most odd thing ive ran into since ive been using computers.

The actual clock on my computer counts fast. If i start up the computer, it will usually be counting fine. Then about 10 minutes later i will notice that im about 20 minutes ahead of time. I can open the actual clock program in windows and SEE the second hand going really fast. Also when i try to play mp3s and type at the same time, the mp3s start to break up. Everything else besides that runs great.

My computer is not overclocked, ive ran a complete virus scan with no results...im stuck :(

thanks for the help but no go

Ok. I've had my computer for the past year and it has never done this before. I forget the specs but i made the pc. it runs GREAT beside that one problem. I have mobo monitor running and my bios temp seems to be working fine (no overheating), but the clock just starts running fast. It has never had a problem before this. Now get this....the clock on the bios is right even after the windows clock has set itself ahead. So this is teling me its probably not something bios related. I DO NOT WANT TO FORMAT :D ...i like to figure things out the right way, not take the easy way out (usually harder after i reinstall all my software and get it running right again). Anyone have this problem before and found a solution? any thoughts would be appreciated

I'm currently having an issue very simular to yours. MY clock sometimes runs fast and then when I reset it, it will stay fine for a certain time and then I will catch it glitch again later on. Also I have had some lockups and so forth. I want to fix this dumb annoyance.

If you suspect that something in Windows is doing this than you could try a few things to narrow it down.

1. Run in Safe Mode.

2. Use MSCONFIG|General tab to start Windows services and startup programs selectively. There are other options too.

3. Logon with a different user account. A new one is preferable.

4. If you know when the problem started you can restore from a restore point prior to that date. If you have one!!!

I'll take all these suggestions into consideration. The problem im havng is, i dont know what causes the clock to run fast. It does it on a completely random basis.

Its kinda like taking your car into the mechanics shop and the car magically fixes itself and the mechanic cant figure out whats wrong....but as soon as you get your car home it starts doing that 'thing' again.

I'm the mechanic, my computer is the car.

I dont think it has done it in about 3 days, but i still dont know :(

I guess ill have to use trial and error to figure out whats going on

you know what? you are not the only one with that problem.... My Clock runs faster and faster each day, by seconds... I dont' know why. Now, its 9 minutes faster :s

I tried formatting my com, repartitioned, anything that comes across my mind... But still, no results :(

  • 1 month later...

I'm running windows XP. The clock stopped doing that stuf for about a week again and then acted up AGAIN! The motherboard is keeping the time because when i restart the computer, the clock in the bios is right and windows resets its clock to the right time. But then after a random amount of time, i'll all of a sudden notice that im x many minutes fast. Ill look at the second hand on my clock and it will be counting about 2x as fast. Anything on my computer that uses the timer control also speeds up.

My specs:

MSI K7N2 delta

AMD Athlon something

BFG nvidia 6800

256 megs of pc2100

guillemot game theater xp sound card

usb 2.0 card

hp dvd420i dvd burner

and thats about it. dont tell me to upgrade my computer because it works fine for what i need (although i do want more ram)

2 possibilities the motherboard can be screwed up, or it's a windows problem.

It cannot be the battary because the only time the battary is in use is when the PC is off.

It's could be the clock generator "PLL" that is borked

Hi, i've the same problem too, my clock reverts back to the same time everytime i reboot, and it goes on very slowly too, and what u said reminds me, it cant be the battery's fault...

Also it doesnt allow me to sync the time, it says "RPC server is unavailable". Prior to the 1st time i noticed the error, i was also unable to sync the time, with just an error.

As i've a few programs that are dependant on the timing, i've had to stop them because of this problem. Is there anyone who can solve this?

PLL borked? care to explain?

Does it happen when your doing anything in particular? I dont even mean specific programs but maybe when your using no system resources or maybe loads of system resources? When your connected/disconnected from the internet?

it seems to happen most when my computer is under stress. But i can play a game on my computer and the clock problem doenst appear. My processor isnt overheating either.

hmm interesting problem that you all have i hav to say!

Just one suggestion, I have come across a program that supposedly "speeds up" windows by "speeding up" the time (clock) of windows, fooling windows into thinking that the faster time is the real time. Dunno if you get what I'm saying or not :o

But here's the website for one of the programs:

http://www.foredu.com/

Mayb u guys should give it a try see if you can set your windows time speed to "normal time"?? :s

Worth a try! :p

    • Windows 11 is getting redesigned taskbar settings in new build by Taras Buria Microsoft is rolling out new Windows 11 preview builds in the Insider program, offering users new features and changes to try ahead of public release. In the Experimental channel (formerly Dev), Microsoft is shipping build 26300.8758, while in the Beta channel, users can download build 26220.8754. The changelogs do not contain much, but there is an important update to taskbar settings. Here is what is new in build 26220.8754: [Taskbar] Taskbar customization just got easier. As we continue to make improvements to the Taskbar experience mentioned last month, we've introduced a dedicated Taskbar Size setting, making it simpler to find, understand, and personalize your ideal taskbar experience. We've also made refinements to the transitions between taskbar sizes for a smoother overall experience. [File Explorer] We've improved the reliability of thumbnail previews for cloud files in the Details pane. The pane has also been reorganized so file properties are easier to find and review at a glance. Fixed an issue where the OneDrive shortcut in File Explorer stops working when File Explorer is run in administrative mode. Fixed an issue where the confirmation dialog might display an internal Recycle Bin file name instead of the original file name when permanently deleting a file. [Sounds] Improved system sounds when using Windows in dark mode. And here is what is new in build 26220.8754: [Smart card removal policy] Administrators can now configure Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and Windows 365 sessions that use Microsoft Entra ID (RDS AAD Auth) authentication to automatically disconnect when a redirected smart card is removed. This extends smart card removal policy enforcement to Microsoft Entra authenticated remote sessions, helping organizations meet security and compliance requirements. [File Explorer] Fixed an issue where the OneDrive shortcut in File Explorer stops working when File Explorer is run in administrator mode. [Taskbar] Improved reliability of loading the system tray area of the taskbar. [Sounds] Improved system sounds when using Windows in dark mode. You can find release notes for build 26300.8758 here and for build 26220.8754 here.
