Well - lets have some details!

When i try to disable the normal way it comes up with a dialog box saying that "....it is not possible to disable at this time. The connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support plug and play" ??

Ok - what protocols do you have installed? Just Tcp/ip - or are you running IPX/SPX and or Netbeui, etc.. Do you SNMP running?

Are you running ICS, and or builtin firewall? Or other firewall software?

Are you even logged in with an Admin account? Which flavor Win are you running? 2k, 2kserver, 2k advanced server, 2k datacenter, XPpro, XPhome, etc..

What specific card do you have of the RTL8139 - there is the B, the C(L) the C(L)+, the 8139D - know exactly what card you have will help track down the problem, etc..

When trying to diagnose a problem - without being able to actually see it (to know these details). NEED to have as many details as possible!!

There could be 1001 reason you can not disable your NIC - without knowing some details. My first thought would be that you do not have admin rights.

When you try and disable it - what errors if any are put into the event log??

Is it connected when you try and disable it?? Any software running that might be talking on it?? Are you running any Monitoring type software.

Is your Box ACPI or APM - I know the 8139D has some powermanagement stuff about it - this could play a factor, etc..

Details, Details, Details ;)

I am having the same problem. The strange thing is this problem started after installing service pack 1065 and forward.

Prier to sp 1065 I was able to release and renew my nic card without a problem. Now I get the same message as the other guys.

I have an intel pro management 100 nic card using tcip, client for microsoft windows and file and printer sharing.

I am running two pc's with the same nic card and the same protocols.

I have removed the protocols and nic cards to fix this problem, no luck, also went out and bought a new one to try still no luck.

All I can say is I am pretty sure the problem is in the xp service pack somewhere.

As someone else already mentioned, disable your network card in the device manager. Re-enable it when you want to connect the thing to a network. In the meantime, though, the little annoying icon in the system tray will go away.

With Peace,
