must have the XP CD to get to recovery console

There has to be something after "\config". Assuming the corrupt hive is the "system" hive, you would do the following:

Boot to the XP CD and select R (Recovery Console)

At the command prompt type:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\system system.old

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config

Reboot

If it's another hive, just substitute it for the word "system"

i have an intel pentium 4 3.0ghz processor,

and an intel extreme series motherboard

how do i set it to boot to the cd?

i do the f2 thing, then im in the menu etc. but i cant find the way to set it to boot to the cd.

after i boot to the cd and once i finish this p-rocess will i need to change it back?

once in the bios, there should be a boot menu across the top. use the arrows on the keyboard to get to the boot menu. down arrow to first boot device, enter key, choose CD-ROM drive. No you dont have to change it back unless you care about the 1-2 secs it may add to your boot time
