.APE to .MP3 or AAC conversion

A friend just sent me a file saved as .APE (which apparently is the "lossless Monkey format" :unsure: ). I can listen to it in Winamp (after downloading the right .dll) but unfortunately not on iTunes and I would like to transfer the file on my iPod.

Are there any free programs which will allow a .APE file to be converted to something iTunes can read? or even WMP (iTunes can then convert the .wma)

(the monkey audio site's download page has "download location: N/A" on it)

CDex can convert Monkey's Audio to mp3.

If it's only one file you can also use dBPowerAMP which has a free trial period (for the mp3 encoder, the rest is free anyway).

(Winamp can do it too, either with an mp3 output plugin or (to wav) the included diskwriter, or with the new Transcoder plugin that's very convenient but unfortunately still has some problems.)

Or you could use either to decode to wav and iTunes to convert it to Apple lossless or AAC.
