Ok have built myself another machine and loaded on Windows Server 2003 Small Business Edition. Am looking to set it up as a home server so that i log onto the server from each computer in the house and access files and use printers. There is 5 computers on the home network at the minute.

Does any1 know any good tutorial sites which would help me set this up?

Thanks

you need a domain controller for that...

Win2K3SBS should be sufficent - you need to create/implement a domain...

Don't know much about SBS do ya? SBS requires the server to be a domain controller.

All the wizards in SBS are really well written. A very nice server setup indeed. I don't think you'll have any trouble figure this stuff out. If you get stuck, just post on here, we'll help ya out.

The wizards are pretty neat!

Just use the various Wizards in Manage Your Server

Trust me I've recently set up 2 servers; Win2k3 Server (as the domain controller + File & Printer Server with IIS for .net development) and Fedora CORE 4 (as backup domain controller and development server). And I didn't had prior experience in either of them.

With Windows its a walk in the park setting up the NAT for Internet Sharing (That's Bye Bye to Firewalls  ) Or setting up for File & Printer sharing.

Took me only 40 minutes to setup 12 computers & users, with FTP support for developers. And NAT for internet connection sharing from 2 different providers.

It was like a battleground while setting up Samba, VSFTP & Apache, took me 2 days for only 3 users. Oh that awefull SE Linux

In order to have your WORKSTATIONS authenticate to a Domain Controller - you need to make sure your home systems are:

1. Windows 2000 Professional (or Server 2000 Standard in member mode)

or

2. Windows XP Professional

Windows XP Home or Media edition will not work

You could use one of the older Windows 9x clients but they are less functional in that environment.

You need to first:

1. setup an Active Directory domain - use the wizards on the SBS2003 to set this up

2. the Wizard will install DNS and configure it for you (it should ask you about this)

3. you should also have, WINS (for older clients), DHCP server (unless your 'router' is issuing Dynamic IP addresses)

4. I use my home system as a VPN/Remote Access server so I can dial in to my home network from work and access my home computers at any time...

Good Luck...

Bill

If I remember correctly, IIS doesn't create host headers for the site so it allows you to access it through the machine name. To fix it, go to run, and type "inetmgr" (without the quotes).

Then, go down the websites tree on the side to find the Default Web Site. Right click and go to the properties of the Default Website. On the main properties page by 'IP Address:', click on 'Advanced'.

Click on 'Add' under 'Multiple identities for this website.' Then, type 80 for the TCP port, and type the server name under the host header value. Exit out of everything, and it should work.

    • yeah it seems to be Edge only. The dialog buttons work as expected in Chrome and Firefox. The phone is using Android 16 (OneUI 8.5) and Edge version  149.0.4022.53
    • I'm not aware of this issue, but to help the other guys.  What version of Android are you using? Did you try a different browser? To see if Edge is the issue here.
    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article? Here is a better article so you actually know what is going on and answers questions you had in other comments --> https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/05/speed-boosting-low-latency-profile-is-one-of-the-improvements-coming-to-windows-11/ It is unclear if one will be able to disable the new profile at this point but I am not seeing any reason why one would.
