corrupted system 32 file

Question

Hi,

This morning when i switched on my pc is said that a system 32 file was corrupt and I needed to insert the windows instalation disk to fix it. After trying many times I just reinstalled windows. But seeing as all my files were deleted i waneted to know is there anyway for me to get the back. One of my friends had done the same thing but got his files back. However he did this on a pc he built not on a dell.

Thanks in advance.

Call Dell and get them to replace the hard drive because it's dying. At work, I have to support users that have Dells and we see that error all the time. Run diagnostics on the drive first or they will jerk you around. If the diagnostics don't come up with any errors...make some up (unrecoverable read error, etc.).

Good luck (their tech support is horrible and slow)

 You could have booted to the Win XP CD, started the Recovery Console, then replaced the missing/corrupted file, using the DOS-like Command Prompt. You would have had to Copy whichever files to a floppy, CD, or Jumpdrive first, from a working Win XP computer, or extracted them from your Windows CD.

You may have been able to Save files to CD or Jumpdrive from the Recovery Console as well.

Now the only hope is to try some type of Recovery software.

I have no experience using this type of software and can't promise that it will help:

The Microsoft fix you point to is for if you have backed-up the Registry, etc. before the drive files go bad.

If and I state if the repair is just a few windows files then you should be able to retain all your settings and files, on the other hand if it is due to disk corruption then you may well have lost anywhere from a few of your files to the entire hard disk worth.

Good Luck on the restore/repair

:)
