For those who track this stuff and it was in the news here on Neowin I think, Microsoft has a hotfix for multicore/dual cpu systems on Windows XP. It seems that this fix was first tied to AMD X2 dual core systems, but on Microsoft support pages it says all multi-cpu systems running Windows XP.

Now, they say it should be applied only if you experience slowdowns etc (very wide description if you ask me). I think my machine wasn't working right from the moment I got it. It seems that my machine runs pretty fast but gets bogged down after working on the computer for some time and I can feel the lag.

I think that this fix is for me too (I run Dual Xeons Nocona 3.6 with 4Gb of RAM) and my machine should be screaming and this is not quite the case. Now, I would call Microsoft and talk to their support, but unfortunately I just can't seem to grab a time window since I"m mountain time and when I get home their WinXP hotfix group has already gone home.

Now, if someone would be kind enough who might've gotten this fix from MS, to pass it forward to me. Don't worry, I do have legal version of Windows XP Pro (OEM), if you are thinking that I'm trying to get this hotfix because I have a shady copy of the OS.

I would appreciate it a lot.

FYI - Might be unreleated, but if you use Outlook on a system with greater than 1GB of memory, there's another hotfix you'll need. I've heard mixed information about whether it was included in Office SP2 or not, so I suppose you could try that first.

Even though Microsoft does not name AMD 64 X2 chips on that page, those are the processors the hotfix is intended for. As far as I can tell, its an issue with Cool n' Quiet conflicting with XP.

I posted a link to an AMD fan site that goes into detail about it.
