Do you guys know TuneUp Utilities 2004?

Well if you do, it has a tool called "TuneUp WinStyler"

Now, the latest version (TuneUp Utilities 2006) Includes a much nicer and upgraded version of WinStyle which allows you to create your own Bootscreens and install them with just one click. Its very easy, you just pick up a picture you want to have as the ntoskrnl background, and tell the loading bar where to appear at, with a few color changes as well...

Here is a quick Guide:

Open up TuneUp Utilities 2006 and click where it says TuneUp WinStyler 2

Now a window like the one you're seeing above should come up. Here you got a few options to choose from... Lets click where it says Boot Screen...

You can load bootscreens you may already have, or download them from the internet... but what we really wanna do is create our own... so lets click where it says "New Screen"

As soon as you click there (well that will depend on your processor lol.. just kidding) you will see a window like the one above... Here you got a bunch of junk, but what matters now is to have the background we wanna use for the ntoskrnl file... lets click where it says "Search local drivers"

Go wherever you have nice pictures or whichever Image you wanna choose as your background. then click open...

like its showing above, you will have the picture right into the screen showing you how your bootscreen is going so far... now you got some controls to play with, like changing the image appareance, the image background color, the loading bar's color and position.. well, you know how you want it...

Once you're done setting up your screen, click where it says "Save Bootscreen", then choose a file and an author's name for it... your screen will be saved instantaneously

Now that your screen is saved, you are ready to install it... you can click on the option that says "show large preview" to see a preview window that comes out just like this:

If you are happy with that, click Install...

It will then install your new Boot screen, and it will add another boot OS to your boot.ini file.. it is nothing but a backup copy of your default OS boot sequence, so if the one you just edited gets messed up or the ntoskrnl doesnt wanna load, you are able to load it with the default windows ntoskrnl file....

Enjoy creating your own Boot Screens the EASIEST!! freakin way on earth :p

You can download it by its own (here) without having to install the whole TuneUp applications set, but I recommend that software since it's really reliable and helps you keep your computer smooth and free of any errors or registry problems.

Quick NOTE:

IF you want to share your Bootscreens, here is the path to where WinStyle saves them:

"X:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\TuneUp Software\TuneUp Utilities\WinStyler\BootScreens"

where X means the Drive letter, and USER, your username...

Well since these files will be WinStyle extensions, there is only a way to get them as dot exe files...

First, you gotta go to TuneUp WinStyle 2 and select the Bootscreen you wanna have, and click on "Install Bootscreen"... What it is going to do, is to compile the file to the System 32 folder as an .exe archive... once you have it as .exe you are able to share your bootscreen and/or add it to another OS by just editing the boot.ini file (ill xlpain that in a few seconds...)

Now, Go to X:\WINDOWS\System32\ and look for the file called "TUKernel.exe"

This file is the actual Bootscreen you have chosen. Copy and paste to wherever you want/need it.

Now, for the boot.ini editing part:

If you want to add your Bootscreen to any other OS without having to install TuneUp Utilties, simply follow these easy steps:

1 - Go to the partition in which you should boot all of your OSs from. (C:\ most of the times... depends on your installation) and type in the address bar: C:\boot.ini

An ini file should open with junk like this:

[boot loader]

timeout=5

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Vista 5231 CTP" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT /USENEWLOADER

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT /TUTAG=O4F3OT /KERNEL=TUKernel.exe

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition (TuneUp Backup)" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT /TUTAG=O4F3OT-BAK

c:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoftows Recovery Console" /CMDCONS

dont get confused by all this junk, this is just all the stuff I got loading on my machine lol

now lets say you got something like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

all what you have to do is add these words " /KERNEL=TUKernel.exe" right after the "FASTDETECT" string, making sure you leave an space between both words...

ONE THING! - You have to copy your bootscreen exe to the SYSTEM32 folder, in order to use it as your bootscreen.

You can name it whatever you want.. lets say that you wanna call it MYBOOTSCREEN.exe.... then the string you just moddified should look like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT /KERNEL=MYBOOTSCREEN.exe

now simply save and close that inf file... If you get an error, go to Folders Option, uncheck "Hide System Protected Files" and "Do not show Hidden Files" options, click apply, and Ok. Then right click on the boot.ini file that is going to show up on the main C:\ folder after you've disable those two options, and uncheck where it says "Read-Only" if its checked...

then save again and close that file.

ANOTHER NOTE!

Before you close, copy that string and delete the KERNEL part, so you have a loader backup just in case your bootscreen executable is not working or was damaged. Make sure you add something like "BACKUP" within the OS description lines. After you are done doing that, you should have something like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT /KERNEL=MYBOOTSCREEN.exe

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition BACKUP" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

Also, no they dont dissapear once the trial runs out... its an exe file... you could create all the bootscreens you want and run them without even using the software.. if you read what I posted or if you already know how to do it... ;)

They haven't uploaded a package to install WinStyler 2 Trial Version.

You would have to dowload the whole utilities package if you want to use WinStyler 2...

Well i have tried this program and it does not work on my machine what so ever xp pro sp2

Well i shouldnt say that it actually will load the splash screen i have created for the boot process.

But then once that is done it goes to blue screen of death that damn for some reason i cant get to stay up and it only lasts like 1 second ive tried the pause button and a few other things but no go so cant get a correct error message and no dump file is created.

Regardless it will not work for me

Hi Jazket - I took your recommendation and am using TuneUp WinStyler 2 to make my boot screens. Thank you so much. It's a great program. Simple to use and understand. I'm into Star Trek and wanted to make an LCars logon screen featuring the U.S.S. Voyager for my computer. I'm really happy with the way it came out. Here's a screen cap (Of course it looks much better full size).

I used a jpg 1024x786-24b

Actually, it's only 16 colors (4 Bit). That's all the XP bootscreen supports, so you can't have it any better. :/

Exactly what he said...

For the theme, thats Royale (XP Media Center). Google it, you will find it to download for free @ Softpedia.com. Also that's a Microsoft's official theme; no need to patch your uxtheme.dll to have this one on.

Oh for those who want to mess with Logon Screens, I will have a Logon screen tutorial from Stardock LogonScreen application sooner or later.

I've abandoned work that I do at times cause I've barely got time to spare... There was this DesktopX theme I was working on for XP and I simply closed it :( I could probably restart it again when Vista comes final.

Hi i've been using this program since 2004 and it kicks ass!!! :woot:

anyhoo if you want to save your boot screens where you can easily find them, just look for the "copy bootscreen to" lnk

pick or create a folder to save to and copy your created boot screens into it.....

i also used that feature to save a copy of my OS boot scr. just in case i needed to replace it in the future...

i have had a problem w/ this program one time deleting my os bootscr. completely, and i ended up needing to replace it for some reason[was awhile ago] that was my "fix" for it, after a not so nice reboot
