I've been seeing NetStumbler mentioned more and more for people with wireless networks. My question is, what is it and what is so special about it? I got the impression that it allows you to view more available wireless networks than the default windows wireless client?

Netstumbler shows you broadcasting wireless networks. A lot of people use it for War driving to search for and map networks in their cities/areas. Netstumbler gives you information such as the amount of noise, the signal strength and the can even record the coordinates of the area you picked the network up in if you have a gps. check out http://www.wigle.net/ for submissions by people who are mapping the wireless network of the world.

Also...would there be any benefit in using Netstumbler in a college university? Would it be specific enough to show which side of a class room gives better signal strength?

Sort of? You would have to walk around the room is my impression. At least that was what I was doing to measure the wireless signal throughout the house.
