Apple G5 Case Modification ..

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Right folks, I've got a PowerMac G5 case that was kicking about at my mate's flat. Being an Apple fan, and a proud owner of a PowerBook 15' .. I thought why don't I modify my pc that I use for gaming and university programming use to look like an G5. which would compliment my apple cinema display as well .. ;)

I've installed numerous software to make windows xp look as close to Mac OSX Tiger courtesy of www.osx-e.com and .. the final part is left how to modify the case.

I was wondering if any one on neowin has done this before and could give me a bit of advice or walkthrough .. or anyone who is willing to help me out .. i'd appreciate it .. umm .. it'll be awesome if I could get this done ..

what do you say folks .. ?

Cheers ..

well I'm a former skinner with the OS X looks in windows, and let me tell you is just a pain in the ass, you computer waste a lot of memory, with the time you will have sometimes froze u system, updates will be a bad experience if u want to keep u windows updated, so I decided not more skin, if u have a real OS X system u don't need it man, you got the real one, u will mess up windows xp

Lasker, I'm not having any problems while keeping my windows emulating the look of Tiger. May be your experience has been a bit bad, but check out a couple of softwares like .. FlyKiteOSX .. it's a brilliant modifier .. on top of that there is msn messenger modifier as well .. which just takes all that stupid bloated things away .. you get a RK Launcher to do the dock .. grab icons from osx-e.com .. grab a skin for firefox which resembles safari .. and other little things .. and you're nearly there ..

umm .. x86 Mac .. umm .. i need software like .. ADA Complier for my university .. so I need windows .. also, to make my DVB-C card work .. so I need to stick to this idea .. and try to fit everything in that G5 case.

Err... why not dual boot the machine? I have to run programs like autoCAD, and solidworks, which are Windows only type programs, however i still have OSX on this machine. If i don't pick a OS in 30 seconds it goes into windowss. I'm using OSX right now to type this one on an x86 laptop...

Or save a couple grand and run it for free while still being able to run windows xp and the thousands of programs you *need* :D It runs at perfect speed right now, I give it another 6 months to a year until they have it running perfect (everything working) on x86

Sorry, maybe I just don't understand the real drive behind all that...you say you have to run some programs that require Windows only...so then run Windows, it does everything you need in the modern world...unless you want to look like a 1337 h4x0r...

I personally use Windows only at woirk since I bought my Powerbook. On another laptop i use Linux.

thought this thread was about a CASE modification, why its in the HARDWARE section.

so why reaming him about mod'ing window's witha OSX like theme

Anyone who spends a lot of money on a mac to see Windows users get it free wouldn't be too happy, I know I wouldn't. That's why you always see Mac users burn Windows users who try to emulate the look. Now Windows users get the best of both worlds with the real thing, soon enough you will see even more Mac owners upset about that.

What I mean is, when I want to play games, I boot into Windows. When I want to use my computer to surf and chat etc I stay in OSX cause its pretty. Best of both worlds, I have a cheaper computer that I can upgrade and still have the benefits of OSX. Windows does everything I need, but its just ugly and not fun to use. It's not about showing off, I just really really love OSX and playing with operating systems. Anyways sorry for going way off topic on this thread I'll shut up now!

this link sure is helpful .. gives me a starting point .. umm .. need to get something that can nicely cut through alumunium .. and keeps it neat at the same time. umm .. the hardware i'm installing is .. pentium 4 .. 2.8 ghz .. 2 gb ram .. asus m/b .. 120 gb harddrive .. dvd write d/l .. my DVB-C card .. and 256 mb ati card .. :)

A jig saw with the proper blade will work well. You would probably have to drill a hole as a starting point. Ask someone at a hardware store for the proper type of blade.

i've got in touch in one of the guys i know who works as a joiner. i've asked him to come around to mines, and have a look a the case. so, hopefully the cutting shouldn't be a problem. i'll be posting a couple of pictures soon, where i've got a couple of issues that i need opnion on .. as to the power supply won't fit on the top right corner of the g5 case, therefore i'm thinking of fixing it on the base .. and putting the harddrive where it goes orginally in the g5.

but fixing the power supply on the base would require be to open it and make an extention so that the socket could be attached where the g5 socket is.

well .. the modification has kicked off .. and lime .. who has done a modification like this .. has agreed to guide me through the modification if required any help .. which I believe is really nice of him. Till now, I've cleaned the case from inside so that the motherboard tray can be installed within the case. now the next phase is to slightly cut the back of the case to make an ATX motherboard sit in there properly ..

Hey guys, finally some update on this post .. As the first phase of the modification required me to cut a ATX form factor at the back of G5 case .. this is how it looks after the cutting ..

i'm quite happy about how the job's been done. The has been cut from the inside as well, making it possible for me to squeeze a motherboard in .. the power supply goes on the base .. where as the harddrives go in the front part of the base .. here are a couple of pictures for now ..

how about your comments ? ..

    • The level of stupidity at Google and Microsoft is beyond belief. All they are doing by killing this is forcing people to jump over to Firefox and ditch them all together, therefore giving Firefox the market boost it needs to finally crush them all in the end.
