PS3 Won't Play Used Games ?

Joystiq report the latest rumor, generated from several patent sites, claims that Sony has secured a patent for a disk technology that prevents the use of used, as well as pirated, software.

The latest rumor, generated from several patent sites, claims that Sony has secured a patent for a disk technology that prevents the use of used, as well as pirated, software. From the registered patent description:

?A device and method for protection of legitimate software against used software and counterfeit software in recording media? A specific title code is read, and if this title code has been registered, the main unit shifts to a normal operation. If the code has not been registered, verification software is initiated? If matching does not occur, the disk is processed as illegitimate software? Since only titles for which legitimate software has actually been purchased and which have been initially registered in the machine table can be used, resale (so-called used software purchase) after purchase by an end-user becomes practically impossible.?

Does Sony plan to employ this technology in the PlayStation 3? Not likely. If so, PS3 owners would not be able to rent (used) games or borrow their friends? games?or even purchase used games! Sure, the technology could be used for Blu-Ray movies, but for games? It just won?t go down like that? right?

How do they know if it's used or new? The disc is the same in a sealed box as it is once the box is unsealed. That makes no sense. Once you open a game it's technically used. After that if you give it to someone the game is still the same, how in the heck could the technology dfferentiate?

This sounds soo dumb. It's like giving some kid LOTS of candy, but he can't shared it with anyone. We buy games, let someone borrow it because it's awsome. Rental Stores would start to just rent movies and games must have been their major selling/renting product. Movies I could understand, but games give me a break. Can we just do what we do? trade? sell? enjoy life? Once you get sick of the game, of course you'll sell it, who wouldn't? Why collect dust while you spent like mmm let's day ps3 games are 100$ for example (don't quote me on the prices), you spend 100$ for a maybe 2 or 3 months of enjoyment then it sits. It's like saying you can buy this table, but you can't sell it to anyone else.

Their turning into the next microsoft. Monoplizing their product so others can't use it. Sad....

unless you hook up the PS3 to the Net, there is no way this could happen. unless the PS3 can burn data unto each disk pretty much saying " this unit has play'd this game" then the unit itself reading " i have played this game, lets roll" or " another unit has played this game, BSOD "

I guess thats what they will be doing.. all disk will have small once writable sector and dvd player will write its serial into that sector. when you try to play it on other dvd player it will show error.. anyway after seeing their DRM in cd's, I will expect anything from Blue-ray drm.

Did you guys read the article or did you just post???

yes, the system apparently will burn ID datat onto the DVD. That data corresponds with a given device, like a PS3. That way only that system can play that particular disc.

It doens't matter though becuase if Sony did this, they could kiss their market share goodbye.

That doesn't make any sense; you no longer be able to rent games, which might hurt some sales, returns would be impossible, assuming the PS3 wrote a some code to each disc. It would be the most absurd thing for Sony to do, I could see it getting modded fairly quick, but I don't see a lot of people touching the PS3 with a 10 foot pole if they went ahead with this at first.

And MS and Nintendo would go laughing all the way to the bank.

I don't think that it burns data to the disc, but rather that each disk has it's own serial number, just like computer software, and that serial number is recorded in an online database and specifically matched to the serial number of the PS3 that it's first played on.

thats three sites claiming this, but I really really doubt this. I dont see they doing this because too many people would be really ticked off. It wouldnt matter if people were ticked off but something like this would impact its sales.

    • Sound Booster 1.13 Build 575 by Razvan Serea Increase volume on your laptop. Boost the volume of even very quiet speakers. Raise volume above maximum. Letasoft Sound Booster can be used as an extra amplifier when the volume of the program you are listening to is too low for comfortable listening and you feel that your PC’s speakers can produce a louder sound. This can be the case when the audio or video has been recorded at the level below normal. Or, for example, when the other person’s microphone you are talking to on Skype, is not working properly. There can be a plenty of other reasons why the sound is being too quiet and there is not much you can do about it except buy external speakers. Sound of any application that is being played in the system can be amplified up to 500%. Letasoft Sound Booster can raise volume of programs like web browsers, on-line communication software (Teams, Discord, Zoom), any kind of media player or games. Simply put, volume of virtually any program that can play any sound in PC, can be boosted to a comfortable level with Letasoft Sound Booster. You can control current volume with the pop-up slider from the system tray. Alternatively, you can assign system-wide hot keys for increasing and decreasing, and use them when you need to adjust volume Letasoft Sound Booster constantly monitors current gain level and prevents samples from clipping, thus reducing all major sound distortions. • I own these and the normal QuietComfort ones from Bose. The QC are amazing and I want to love these, but for the life of me, I have a terrible time getting them attached to my ears.
    • Thanks for the tip. I am giving it a try. Initial quick impression: I like it.
