OS X Keyboard shortcuts...

Recommended Posts

OK. I've got a question...

Anyone know the keyboard shortcut for this in OS X? In IE for Windows, I can hit F4 and the focus will be set to the address bar. Anyone know if there's a shortcut for this in IE for OS X??? I got WAY too used to this as I never have to pick up the mouse to type in a web address

THanks

Instead of using F4, I always used Ctrl-O. It will open up the "open url" dialog. you can type your address in there.

That works for Windows, but not OS X. It'll bring up a open dialog, but entering a web address doesn't work. Anyone else wanna try? (Thanks though)

How do ya take a pic of your desktop in OSX?

Thank you :)

There are 4 commands I use:

Command + Shift + 3 = Whole screen dumped to a file on the desktop

Command + control + Shift + 3 = Whole screen dumped to the clipboard

Command + Shift + 4 = selection dumped to a file on the desktop

Command + control + Shift + 4 = selection dumped to the clipboard

The selection ones bring up a little cross hair and you then drag to make the selection.

I thought I'd add a few more shortcuts to this thread. I bought the latest Mac Format and it had a load of tips I've never heard of before.

Finder

I guess you all know about this, it's command and drag to rearrange the items in the menu bar. You can drag additional ones onto there if you want by looking in System > Library > CoreServices > Menu Extras. Here you can also look inside the menu extras and change the icon if you want (Tim ;) ).

When a finder window is open, press command and ~ (tilde) to bring up a prompt. You can then instantly navigate to a folder, it has autcomplete as well.

When in List view, pressing control and tab will cycle through the sorting criteria (filename, date etc), control + shift + tab to go backwards. Same shortcut applies in column view as well except that it cycles through all the columns without losing your place.

The Finder toolbar now, hold shift and click the widget in the top right corner, this will bring up the customise dialog.

command click on the title on the title bar to produce a pop up bar which will allow you to instantly navigate to any folder in the list.

Dock

alt - click an item in the dock to switch to that application and hide the previous one. command + alt + click an item to show that application and hide all others. command click a dock item to open the folder containing that application.

Right click a dock item and by pressing the alt key, you have the force quit command right in the dock. Pressing the alt key whilst various menu's are open will also have different options.

misc

alt clicking on the min, max and close widgets will effect all that applications open windows. As a result you can minimise, maximise or close all windows with a single click.

I thought those were all pretty cool, especially the dock one for hiding and the alt + widgets trick.

I'll certainly be using them.
