Taking on OSCommerce...

Question

Hi,

Im in the middle of creating a system intended to offer an alternative to OsCommerce. I say alternative because I am not misguided enough to think that the system i am creating will rival the base that OsCommerce has established itself on. The system I am creating is designed to be really easy to customise is both content and basic design.

So why am I posting here? Im looking for enthusiastic developers/gamers to help to create templates, language files (its multi-lingual, or alteast its designed to support it) and basicly getting a community going.

Why gamers? The money rasied by the system (through donations etc) is intended to fund/support a huge online CSS AND BF2 gaming event with cash prizes palnned for next summer/early autumn.

Anyone that creates a language file / template will get a mention in a special area on the site and if you do more (make mods etc or work as an admin) we do well you'll get some event related gifts (mug/t-shirt).

Intended release of the system is the middle of december. So im trying to line up some translators/etc for that time so we can release the first version with multiple langauge/template options.

Stay posted for more information and screen shots soon or visit http://forum.howz-trix.co.uk/phpBB2/ and offer your services.

Once this system is up and running work will begin on the site for the gaming event aswell as some additional systems for gaming clan management, sports club management and a system for general site management (an advanced blog).

All will be OS, multilingual and will be used to advertise each other and the event.

It looks nice, but one thing I noticed right off while clicking through the product listings is that you don't have any sort of breadcrumb trail. Given how deep you can go within each category, you probably want to add the breadcrumb to help users see a) where they are, b) how they got there, and c) how to get back to where they were.

For example (if we're on the Red page):

Products -> Shop-Trix -> Templates -> Default Styling -> Red

with everything except for Red being a link back to that page.

The first version will be set-up paypal enabled.

During installation (comes with an installer) you enter your paypal details and the system will be ready to go then and there.

The idea is that the system is built up of blocks so you can make new templates and modules really easily, the systems probably going to be realeased with 5/6 similar designs, after beta testing in January it will be realeased with full instructions on how to customise the main sections.

The user section will come with order history's and the admin panel will allow orders to be managed (status changed etc). Im not sure whether to include shipping with the first release, it depends on the demand. Im aiming for simplicity and diversity from a design and customisation perspective. Im a one man design team, code, marketing and the graphics I think shipping would be a step to far for the next 4-6 weeks.

Thanks for the feedback so far!

    • (macOS) Screen zoom was broken for me in beta 1 and it's now working properly in beta 2. In terms of performance and UI design/consistency, these betas are already much better than Tahoe.
    • Less powerful than a PS5 at twice the price! I wonder if they use that for marketing? Totally DoA.
