A friend asked me to post this way of getting Direct X 8.1b to manually install on XP.

Seems when you try to install 8.1b on a XP system, it goes through all the motions like its installing then the installer just ends, if you check your dxdiag, it will still report the 0801 original version that shipped with XP.

Now i read on a site that if you download dx8.1b, extract the files to a folder then manually install the ini's by rt clking on them (like 8 or so) then your version ups to 0901.

however i have found that once you do this dxdiag reprts that older files have been installed when you run dxdiag again, yet the dates on the files are recent.

I did this method and it upped my version to 0901 which subsequently didnt do anything for me. but i dont remember the site where i got this method from.

Did anyone run across the same method? also could you post the link?

The End

MS will not up DX till 9 comes out. The version included will be 0901 (8.1b) if anything with SP1, up from the original 8.1 version 0801.
