PDA for notetaking

Recommended Posts

I used to have a Palm m100 - a black screen, and bought a keyboard for it. I found because of limitations of: resolution, storage space, software on the Palm for Notetaking, syncing and some other reasons it wasn't a practical way to keep notes.

Now, I'm finding that - prob like other students, my class notes are all over the place. It makes studying harder and I have to do double the work to put it back in.

I've thought of buying another PDA either Palm or Windows CE based. My university library also has Wireless access and terminals get harder to find at school to search for books. A PDA with wireless access would be really great. I need a PDA that can attach a keyboard - ideally the keyboard shold be reasonalbly priced. Any suggestions?

Edit: More imporatantly, I need something that will easily sync with a Mac and I need to find a good note-taking software.

I'll second the Palm T|X with a Palm Universal Keyboard. It's a nice all around unit which also has built in WiFi so you could connect to your libraries network. The T|X also comes with software so you can sync with a Mac (something Pocket PCs don't include).

I haven't had any problems with my T|X using wireless. I can browse the web (I might add the Palm browser Blazer render pages much better the the pocket version of Internet Explorer but Blazer also lacks Flash), get my email, even download files from campus but connecting to their VPN server.

I haven't found anything on my T|X that I can't do on it (I can even remotely connection to my home computer while on campus).

I've been looking at the Tungsten E2 - its on sale @ Staples w/ a Keyboard for $299.00 (Can $).

The wireless isn't super important, I was only going to use it to skip the queue in the library to look p books. Its about $100 for the add-on wifi card. I'd rather not get it at that price.

If anyone here knows of another sale in Canada, it would be appreciated.

If you get a T|X you'll have built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth so all you would need to get is a keyboard so you would probably come out cheaper then getting the Tungsten E2 plus a Wi-Fi card and you'd have a better unit (higher resolution screen, a lot more memory, and a faster processor).

I wrote a review of the T|X a little bit ago here. I go over a lot of the features there...

get an axim x30 off ebay, you can get it for probably $150, it has wifi and bluetooth built in

One problem with an Axim (or any Pocket PC) is that Drunken said he wanted something that syncs with a Mac and PocketPCs don't have that ability.

T|Xs can't take photos or record video.

T|Xs don't have a built in keyboard.

My (4 year) old NX70V, which also runs Palm OS 5, has both- plus support for Picsel Viewer which reads native PDFs (better than DocsToGo 8 does).

I dunno. Palms don't really have a killer model anymore.

Actually there is very good program to sync with Macs but whatever.

I'm actually using the Palm version of that software to sync my PDA with my PowerBook and I have to say it's a great program.

I also tried their Pocket PC version with a Pocket PC I borrowed and I have to say it was pretty limited. It synced with address book and iCal but that's about it. Unless you downloaded software in .cab files you couldn't actually install it on your Pocket PC. A big problem here is that most Pocket PC software that I seen comes in Windows Installers so this program won't be much use there. Also there is no Mac software that synces with a Pocket PC but there are a ton of Mac programs that sync with Palm software.

The problem is Microsoft has pretty much locket the Pocket PC to the Windows platform (which I understand being it's their product but it stops you from using them if you don't use Windows).

I don't get it, how do you guys able to take notes on such a small screen? It's like you can't fit a chemistry equation on one line, right?

Are you talking about hand-written notes, or typed notes? If you use the Notepad, you can use a narrower pen, and the page scrolls, so you can get a couple of screens of info into one note. That's not what it's meant for, though. It's mean for jotting down phone numbers reminders, etc. A better solution is to use a wireless keyboard with a word processor such as DocsToGo or OfficeSuite.
