Access VNC server through proxy

Recommended Posts

I recently got in university and now I only come home on the weekends, never the less, I keep my home computer on with UltraVNC installed so I can access it remotely from wherever I am.

Now, my university has wireless internet access (as with every university out there) through out the whole campus but thorugh that network, I can't access my home vnc server.

Some details about the connection to the wireless network:

Network Authentication: Open

Data Encryption: WEP

The network key is provided for me automatically

Enabled IEEE 802.1x authentication with the EAP type: SecureW2 (http://www.securew2.com)

And then I have a student login username/password to access the network

The wireless network is behind a LAN proxy, every program I want to use, Internet Browser, E-mail client, and things like that, I need to use the following proxy: proxy.uminho.pt in port 3128 or use the automatic proxy configuration url: http://proxy.uminho.pt/proxy.pac. This is an HTTP proxy.

We also have a SOCKS proxy (v5), socks.uminho.pt in port 1080 without authentication and the following list are the services allowed by the socks proxy:

22 SSH (Secure Shell); SFTP

23 Telnet

80 HTTP

110 POP3

119 NNTP (News)

443 HTTPS

563 NNTPS (News seguras)

993 IMAPS (IMAP Seguro)

995 POP3S (POP3 Seguro)

1723 PPTP

8080 Web Cache

And as you probably know, the VNC server works on port 5900 and so I can't connect to it. I can't even use the web based java viewer because that uses port 8500 and it's the same as trying to access through the viewer in port 5900.

Now, any help on how can I connect through my university wireless network to my vnc server? So I can freely access my home computer?

Change the port your vnc server listens on - quite easy to do..

This is from the admin props of UltraVNC.. But other flavors of VNC (ie Real, Tight, etc.) also allow you to change the listen port.

A more secure option would be to setup a ssh server on your home machine, and just tunnel your vnc connection through the ssh..

From your list - 22 is an allowed port.

    • I will believe it when it happens. iOS 18 was heavily rumoured to be a massive overhaul with visionOS glass style UI elements. Never happened. I don't even believe the x26 naming scheme is real either, feels more like an April fools joke *shrugs* I'll be happy to be proven wrong. However, till Apple themselves say it's so I will remain skeptical.
