Upgrading memory on an eMac

Recommended Posts

In the newspaper office at my university, there are two computers that I would like to try to upgrade or replace by the end of 2006 in order to make all computers OS X compliant. One is a PowerMac G3 (400 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB Hard Drive), which has no hope in heck of being upgraded so OS X can be used. Thus, I'll probably see if it's possible to just buy a Mac Mini to replace it. The other one is an eMac (700 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive (?)). If I could find a way to upgrade the memory to 256 MB (512 MB would be preferred), then I could simply just upgrade the RAM and purchase OS X 10.4 for that computer. Does anyone know what's the maximum amount of RAM the eMac 700's can handle and what memory would be recommended? Or would it be cheaper to just replace the eMac as well?

Thanks in advance.

So you're saying that any kind of PC133 SDRAM will do then? If so, thanks for the heads up. And as for the OS X 10.4 on a PowerMac G3, it would not be recommended as 256 MB of RAM is required and chances are, that computer is at least six years old. And if I'm not mistaken, unscrewing those eMacs should be easy (using a coin like on the iBook).

I wouldn't say all PC133 sticks will work, maybe 90% of them Mac's are slightly fussy. Check out the Crucial site for memory details.

You don't need to open the entire shell to replace the ram, the area is under the Mac, like a little panel which has one screw holding it in.
