Question

Lo',

I made a post sort of like this about a year ago, and got a few responses, but I stopped coming on Neowin and that was soon forgotten about.

______

We are members of Neowin, 96th largest board on Earth - tech forums....

Between us, we know everything there is too know (about Computers, but also alot of other things), especially programming languages.

I was thinking, if we could build up a team of people, to make an awesome app, and a kick ass website to go along with it?

This is not intended to be commercial, but would be cool if it was. This will more than likely be a large project.

At the moment, Im only wondering if anybody is interested, thats all.

EDIT: Also, post what your skilled in =)

Ditto what technoblinc said. I'd be interested in a community project, provided you have more details forthcoming?

Well what I was thinking was a Media Player. But FULLY customizable, plug-in support, with many sweet things like Winamp, but more/different features than any of player.

But thats just an idea

It's been done (and very well I might add) in mp3act (even though it's only for MP3's and only runs on a *nix platform).

Oh, and I assume you are talking about some form of web application, and not a desktop application? We are, after all, in the Web Programming forum...

No Im talking about a Normal application, its just the website I want to be just as important as the normal program, and I can only post in one forum... so I posted in this one as I thought it got more views....

Well as I said the media player was only an idea. As I also said before, Im only wanting to see if people would be interested before I gave the program idea much thought...

Most, if not all, of the replies you get will be from web programmers. I am with metal_dragon and JoeC, we are here for web applications.

I don't know about them, but I'd be interested in helping out with the website. But for the actual product, you'll have to try elsewhere to find help on that.

Rudy, Im not trying to make this mine. Im trying to bring people from Neowin together, as so much knowledge is known between us, and I believe something awesome can be made here.

If you also read the post properly, I said more things than "Team management."

Please find somewhere else to bitch.

It's a good idea, but you have nowhere to start yet. It's like saying, "Let's get rich by starting a business." You need to be able to say, "Let's get rich by starting a business that does.... ". Instead of looking for help, maybe look for ideas?

  • kernel? Nope... Linux
  • desktop? Nope... Gnome / KDE
  • word processor? There's OpenOffice.org
  • spreadsheet? presentation? again, OpenOffice.org
  • browser? FireFox
  • email? Thunderbird
  • instant messaging? GAIM
  • database? MySQL
  • web scripting? PHP
  • web server? Apache
  • CMS / forum / portal / wiki / image gallery / blog? Egads! www.opensourcecms.com

Those are the things that I use a computer for... other than my job. Although there are a few things that I do where the open source options I have found seem lacking. These are:

  • project management: for open source, there's GanttProject. To purchase, there's MS Project. I don't know project management well enough to know if the open source option is good (enough).
  • personal finance management: there's jGnash, or you can buy MS Money or Quicken. I've used M$ and jGnash and I'm still willing to pay for the former because it's so much more usable.

I write software. It's how I pay my bills. But the stuff I write is all industry or company specific. For general use, my needs are at least addressed.

Oh, and for the all-in-one web server... isn't that XAMPP?

Well as far as projects go you will struggle to find something truely orginal, I myself am running a project to compete with OSCommerce. shop-trix post Im not doing what they've done before I intend to do things I feel they should have done. Im doing it to learn PHP more than anything as im only a year out of Uni.

If people want to offer some assistance that would be cool but otherwise goodluck with this project! Sounds like fun.

What would be nice, is some program to keep track for your CDs a DVDs, like advance catalog.

Ideas of how it could work,...

-You put start the program, insert a data CDs or DVDs with files, it scans them, get advance properties of each files and numbers it and also be able to put some notes for each one.

-Afterward, you start the program, can do a search by keywords and or properties, like, lenght, size, format, date, resolution etc,... Hit enter, scan and in a window you see results.

I got NO skill for a project like that. Just liked to have a free program like this to use.

VLR

I say go with Neo-player :p ( that sounds pimpish...) for mp3s... people are ALWAYS looking for an alternative...

Yep, I was thinking that. But then I realized there is just far too many. Now we are looking for something that you had to pay for, but make a free alternative.
