Question

Lo',

I made a post sort of like this about a year ago, and got a few responses, but I stopped coming on Neowin and that was soon forgotten about.

______

We are members of Neowin, 96th largest board on Earth - tech forums....

Between us, we know everything there is too know (about Computers, but also alot of other things), especially programming languages.

I was thinking, if we could build up a team of people, to make an awesome app, and a kick ass website to go along with it?

This is not intended to be commercial, but would be cool if it was. This will more than likely be a large project.

At the moment, Im only wondering if anybody is interested, thats all.

EDIT: Also, post what your skilled in =)

Programmer, basic graphics designer, web programmer, IDEA MAN, and ubergeek at your service...

I have worked on all the above categories.. I have 6 websites, working on 5 different (big) programming projects in 4 languages, and willing to help :D

3 of the projects are never-done-before ingenious kind of stuff.....

Send me an email if you care..... [email protected]

I'm a certified system developer and have a long record of projects and a history in demo scene, but what you are saying here sounds totaly strange. How can a person work on 4 big projects at once, have a life and spare time for other things?

Let me sumarize some of your threads.. in several threads you ask for other peoples help to design basic images, how can you be graphics designer if you don't even know where to find "Get flash player" image? Browsing through rest of your threads shows that you have little knowledge in API calls (specially .NET), not knowing difference between firefox and mozilla and other funny things. My personal opinion is that a person calling itself Computer Guru without any specific knowledge in computer hardware and software is just a mere joke.

BTW, no offense ;)

Well I think once brainstorming for a project is done, and you can find programmers to actually make the program, let me know. I'd be interested in helping with the web design aspect of it. My specialty is ASP and JavaScript.

My personal opinion is that a person calling itself Computer Guru without any specific knowledge in computer hardware and software is just a mere joke.

Let me explain then... Working on 4 big projects does not mean that they are all working at top-speed; one of them is now in its final stages, just needs debugging and a couple of new (simple) features.. That would be Startup2Service.

The other I have just started on as a member of a team, it is currently taking up most of my time.. Its a game; no more details can be revealed at the moment.

Third project I have just started on my own, its SIMPLE but the IDEA is big. I expect it to make a big difference and to be seen as very useful, but again, I'm working on this alone, and have just finished the brainstorming, so I don't trust the world enough to give details..

4th big project I am not a lead-programmer, I just do some forms or help out on some functions. Notice I never said I was in charge of all four, in reality its three that I am big-way in on, all of which are BIG projects in and of themselves..

I also never said I had a life, did I? Cuz I don't. I admit it. I know about 60 times more people on the web then I do in real life. That's me, and I don't see how that should matter to anyone.. My "Get Flash Player" thread was NOT what you think it is. It was one of my first posts on Neowin, I was not clear, but I was wondering if there was a "Get Flash Player" logo PROGRAM; as in a sign-up sheet on their site, etc. as Adboe Reader has....

Can I ask where I don't know the difference between Mozilla and Firefox? I have been using Firefox as pheonix and firebird, I am on the Firefox bug-busting team (I admit not a big member, but I have my share); and used Mozilla before Firefox came out.

I taught myself programming. I can write almost anything, but the problem is, I am not familiar with properly-structured programming, etc. and in the past instead of using APIs I have chosen to re-invent the wheel in my ignorance. I 'd like to learn however, and I am not afraid to admit that is a weakness.

Where did you get anything about hardware from anyway? For such a long and obviously hating rant (jealousy?) I find it funny how you end it with no offense, because I'm sorry, but yes, I took this personally. I am proud of my skills, and I do think I have quite a few. I do not claim to be the best, but I have my fair share (10k+) posts answering people's questions, I have my website (http://neosmart.net) where I post the programs I make, I have a blog that has some pretty big vistors (http://neosmart.net/blog), I am a member on more than a 150 different forums, and I think I deserve my title. On the Vista Beta I have about 80 active bugs, and about as much in R2 + WLM + Office 12 in total. I hope this answered your questions (or your rants), and if you have anything else, please MSN me at [email protected]; I am ready and willing to answer any questions you might have, as well as fend off any personal attacks.

Oh yeah, "Spare Time?"

What's that??? I sleep 2-3.5 hours a day. Ask anyone, I am on MSN till 4-5 AM, and back on at 7 or 8.... I have to go to University, and I have exams.. I have not had ANY 'Spare Time..' nor did I claim too....

<offtopic> Umm... your site looks kinda boring it doesn't look to good. 150 forums? Yay for you. I'm pretty sure no one cares. </offtopic>

Disturb3d, I agree with VLR's idea. Sounds like a good one to me! :) Good luck to everyone!

Thanks for the interest.

But the brainstorming isnt done yet.... We are still taking ideas if anybody wants to post any?

You haven't even stated a target platform, yet. I have eight years' experience in PowerBuilder with some "advaced beginner" skill in PHP and C#. With the first, I can sling some kick-a$$ code, but it's MS Windows only. Mono may get me into Linux, but I've never worked with any of the *nix GUI toolkits (GTK). And with PHP I can do a bit of web app development. But my forte (which I do offer) is in client-server Win32 development. (BTW, PowerBuilder is a 4GL language, so if needed, I can move over to another 4GL language pretty easily.)

Really, though, where are you going? Cross-platform? Open-source version of something commercially available now? Who's your target audience? What are some of the big needs that you might decide to fill?

  • 0

i think this is Windows, eh Distrb3d?

After all we ARE targetting the biggest userbase

Erm  so why don't you target everyone who uses the internet instead of targeting a platform/language. Make a system which has a windows version and a Unix version.

• Cross platform app sounds good. It would appeal to alot more people.

But so far, I dont know any languages that are compatible with linux, I dont think Computer Guru does, and Jason 'Bug' Fenter, doesnt knows enough about it, I dont think.

• Not open source but free....to begin with anyway, we will see what happens.

• Target audience - n/a at the moment, all i can really say is a wide variety of computer users (cross platform) as the idea hasnt been decided yet.

Do any linux coders want to volunteer?

I think cross-platform compatibility is most important because we wouldn't want someone to be disabled from using our "product" simply because they aren't using the right OS. Just like the internet, we wouldn't want to create a website only suited for one browser.

This is a simple analogy. When America was racially discriminated, people didn't like it. When African-Americans were forced to use different water fountains and bathrooms, or forced to sit in the back of the bus and give up their seat. They weren't allowed to exercise full rights as citizens.

You wouldn't want to be disabled from using something simply because you were using Linux rather than Windows, would you?

I know enough C/C++ to cover my @$$, just not enough to be comfortable making something real big... it depends on what you end up picking, but remember, whatever we write can be ported... lets jsut pick something...

BTW who rated thsi topic a one??

OK, We now have the project idea, thanks to VLR.

To recap on this:

-You put start the program, insert a data CDs or DVDs with files, it scans them, get advance properties of each files and numbers it and also be able to put some notes for each one.

-Afterward, you start the program, can do a search by keywords and or properties, like, lenght, size, format, date, resolution etc,... Hit enter, scan and in a window you see results.

It will be cross-platform (Linux and Windows, Apple hasnt been decided.

I'm a beginner in C/C++. And I mean beginner. (Syntax, OK; Pointers, NO) I'm entirely self-learned, although I'll be taking a C programming class next semester at the local college. I'd really like to work on something like this, although I lack the credentials to do so. Perhaps if there are some more experienced programmers out there willing to take me (and others in my shoes) up under their wing, I'd help, but I'd be lost without some guidance.

Whatever we do, I would like to see it very comprehensively documented. (i.e. turn on CamStudio while you're programming, etc.) I'm certainly willing to help with that. I would like for others to learn from our project, more than just to use it. Perhaps that's what the website can be for...

I would like to see something using OpenGL. (Perhaps like a free version of 3dsmax, if there isn't one already [besides gmax].) I mean, if we're going to take on a project like this, why not? There are many of us who maybe know the basics of programming, but wouldn't dare start a project like this on their own. But that's why we have each other! :)

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • What the press release doesn’t mention, however, is how much water the natural gas plant itself will consume, Natural gas plants use about 2,803 gallons of water per megawatt-hour produced, which is significantly less than coal-fired plants that use around 19,185 gallons per megawatt-hour. Overall, natural gas plants are more water-efficient, using 584% less water than traditional power plants on average. AI generated
