At my old school, we were able to send messages by using the "NET SEND" command. At the school I'm at now, I'm not able to use that anymore, I think because we log in to a Novell NetWare server. Is it possible to send messages to other users on the network using some sort of command or program?

If the computers have the Novell client installed (I'd assume they do), you can send mesasges through that. I'm not entirely sure how to go about doing it since I haven't used it in a while, but if you right click the N icon in the system tray and browse through the different options, "Send message" (or something along those lines) will be there somewhere. If it is greyed out (disabled), I know there is a registry key you can change to enable it.

Then again, if the school doesn't want you sending messages to classmates, maybe it would be a better idea to wait until recess to chat with them. ;)

Yeah, I think I remember seeing that being grayed out. What do you have to change in the registry to enable it? This isn't being used for any inappropriate purposes, I just sometimes need to tell someone something without getting up, and I don't want to have to install any IM programs on the computers.

Whats grayed out and what isnt usually isnt controlled locally. After you login it checks to see what you can and cant do. Basically your gona have to either get up, or find another way to talk to him.

Usually on school networks, as stated above, restrictions aren't controlled locally, they're part of a domain policy set by the DNS whenever you log on and there's not much you can do about it unless you're a domain administrator. Domain restrictions override those set by the machines' local settings. I'm in charge of a domain at my old high school in the A+ lab and while the Administrator account is enabled by the settings on each machine, I've disabled it on the server so even if they try to log onto it locally, the server running the domain prevents it. You'd have to have access to the server's settings to change this policy probably.

Load up the registry editor and go into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Novell/ and browse around there... maybe search for "message" and use your logic to enable it. I did this at school and it worked fine. It's worth a try, anyway.
