[Guide] Remove 'My Sharing Folders'

Recommended Posts

A more proper way to use that command is with an evironment variable. Not everyone's system drive is C.

For the latest beta:

regsvr32 -u -s "%programfiles%\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0106.00.dll"

  • 2 weeks later...

I always get rid of "My Sharing Folders" using this method, however, the other day on a laptop I set up I got a message in WLM saying something along the lines of "Your computer does not support Sharing Folders" I'd love to know how I can replicate this "error" so that I don't need to bother with Sharing Folders anywhere else!

Couldn't you put a wildcard in where the version is? For example

Instead of:

regsvr32 -u -s ?C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.0.0812.00.dll?

You could have

regsvr32 -u -s ?C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.*.dll?

Or doesn't that work in :pndows :p

the damn thing keeps reappearing. It unregisters alright, but the next time I start MSN messenger, it 'repairs' the installation on its own.

Yup - same here. After removing the file, the installer comes on and "repairs" itself.

Microsoft is REALLY trying get on peoples' nerves with My Sharing Folders now...

For those whos system drive isn't "C", here is the command for the latest version using an environment variable.

regsvr32 -u -s "%programfiles%\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll"

Its useless, sharing folders return the next time wlm is run :(

No its not. :) I just found out if you don't use the Shortcut to Windows Live Messenger made itself during the install it won't restore the my sharing folder!

Delete the selfmade shortcut and create a new one by going to the C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\ dir and make a shortcut of msnmsgr.exe.

Those that have installed the latest version of MSN Messenger, or Windows Live Messenger as it is now called, have probably noticed that it installs a link in My Computer called 'My Sharing Folders'.

If, like me, you're not interested in this feature of WLM, or you just don't like the way it dumps a shortcut under My Computer, you can remove it by unregistering the Messenger File Sharing Shell Extensions dll.

do this by going to start > run, and typing in:

regsvr32 -u -s "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\fsshext.dll"

(Y)

Since many people can have other language Windows, I'd suggest

regsvr32 -u -s "%ProgramFiles%\MSN Messenger\fsshext.dll"

Since many people can have other language Windows, I'd suggest

regsvr32 -u -s "%ProgramFiles%\MSN Messenger\fsshext.dll"

Infact its

regsvr32 -u -s "%ProgramFiles%\MSN Messenger\fsshext.8.1.0178.00.dll"

I just tried this in vista 32bit with the latest version of WLM and the sharing folder is still there. I checked in the msn messenger folder and the dll file is the same one in the code. Can anyone help me out?

Try this:

Setup:

1/ Download, Extract all files including .bat files and CLOSE DOWN WLM!

2/ Run exe and click the button you wish to do to your folders [Remove or Restore]

3/ Done! Bootup WLM!

Nice one matty, that got the job done, cheers mate

EDIT: posted too soon. As soon as I open WLM it reinstalls the sharing folders, bugger!!!!!!

Use the registry key, this one works, you dont need to close down WLM and it doesnt reinstall!:

Just run registry entry you wish, includes restore or remove.

And the application i just edited the bat file's.
