Man I love linux!

and the update takes up to a day for me! is it because my internet connection is only 512kbps? i use fedora...

I suspect so. On broadband, my updates (with all flavors that I've used... including Fedora) take only minutes. And that is for the whole system.

Ubuntu Linux was relatively hassle-free for me, but I always seem to end up going back to Windows, mainly because I can't live without Photoshop. :p

If there were a Linux version, I'd be all set...and no, GIMP is not an acceptable alternative.

I know, some can't accept Gimp, me for example. But you may want to try Pixel (pixel32.box.sk), it's a great alternative to Photoshop and works on all kinds of platforms. It costs though, $32, but I thought "what the heck", bought it and it does all I need (webdesigns).

Well look at my first post.. I have no problem waiting :p Speaking of which, the reason I havent updated in so long is because my computer has been without a power supply.\

Actually, after that I downloaded another 600 files (went from Hoary to Breezy because I had some how downgraded itself) but that took about an hour. Larger files I guess.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry if this thread is useless to you but I have to say yet again I'm so pleased with Linux. I just downloaded almost 400 upgrades (yeah it's been a while) in less than 6 minutes. Upgrading the whole computer at once rocks so much

I like Windows

I think Linux is ok

I love BOBBIES :D

I am getting further into my career and for me to advance much more I needed to learn unix and linux. So I decided to dive in head first back in Sept and learn what I could. After 2 weeks of playing with linux on a laptop I decided to build my webserver at home with Debian and I must say it was a great decision. Since then I have built 2 desktops and one laptop with linux and all mainly for playing around and seeing what I can learn. I won't be able to go Linux 100% of the way due to some apps I use but I can honestly say I use windows 50% of the time and linux the other 50%. I guess the thing I like most about linux is you feel like you are actually doing someting in the OS with command line rather then point and click. On the other hand I get frustrated trying to figure out how to do things in linux that were so easy in windows.. like I said it is a 50/50 thing for me. :)

I started using Ubuntu 5.04 just before 5.10 came out. Got my feet wet for awhile using the 5.04 and then upgraded to 5.10. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! Once I got the audio/video codecs all working, I couldn't be happier. When Dapper comes out, I am going to wipe all 4 of my machines out (all 4 dual boot XP Pro and Ubuntu) and install it as my soul OS. Would've done that when I upgraded to Breezy, but I need my scanners, which don't work on Ubuntu (dumb ass Visioneer anyway!!) By then, I will have scoped out whats on sale and what works with Linux as far as scanners. As far as how often I boot into Windows it equals only when there has been a windows update and a couple times I've needed the scanner so far. Otherwise, Ubuntu all the way!!

I did have 5 dual booting systems, but my wife said uh-uh on her computer and I had to remove Ubuntu. :(

GNU/linux is really the bomb!! :woot:

I love it to install without needing anything but the binary's (src if that's your thing) or a high speed connection, that includes reading anything off a label  . It's not necessary it seems.. (besides the underlying freedom involved)

I love the GPL

Also being able to choose what software to install , all the way , is great (<- I think that might be a understatement :shiftyninja: ), feels right and makes sense

(like it is a choice to use MS windows, which isn't a bad one in some cases)

can't wine run photoshop? I use a program called Cedega to play directX games on linux and it works wonders. The main game I play is not supported yet but once it is because once your a member you get to vote witch games you'd like to see the I'll probaly be going linux all the way. Cedega is based off of wine but then once they started licencing it they became seperate from the wine project. I've included a wine and a Cedega link below.

Linux is great. Isn't it amazing how a free product could be this good and give MS a run for it's money? Linux already rules the server market. Unfortunately Linux has a while to go to even gain ground on Windows.

Great to hear it.

I've been using Gentoo and XP for a while, but recently my hard drive got corrupted (who knows how), and although XP bit the dust, Gentoo survived just fine after just a bit of fsck'ing. I've been too lazy since to actually install Windows, Linux is suiting me perfectly fine.

i like linux too but i always end up with driver problems with my nvidia cards.... right now on my kubuntu i managed to get the driver installed and everything (with my dual monitor setup it was a bit harder than usual) but when i drag windows around etc it feels a bit slugish

Funny. In every thread like this, the same comments come up. But most of them work the other way around as well. Example? Here it goes: Even if I wanted to use Windows or OS X, I couldn't, as I use two commercial apps that are both available for Linux, but not Windows or OS X (Avid Softimage|XSI: Windows and Linux; Apple Shake: OS X and Linux). That's not the only reason for me, but an important one nevertheless.

But yes, the need to run specific applications (as in: the applications are more important than the OS) is a very valid reason. These days, I think the OS and the KDE desktop itselft are killer-apps I couldn't live without. Because they really boosted my productivity. So yeah, I can't play any game anymore, and I had to replace Photoshop by an application that worked on Linux (Newtek Aura, works perfectly and very fast with Wine, for years). But it was well worth it! And for games, I prefer consoles, anyway (the few games that don't really work well on consoles, like FPS, are usually available for Linux, anyway - Quake 4 and stuff like that).

rockwolf,

the Audigy 2 is perfectly supported. I use one myself. There must have been a configuration problem or something...

MajinDark,

not only does Photoshop CS work with Wine, Photoshop 7 works perfectly with Crossover Office (it's an officially supported application, even used in large production studios like Disney). Adobe seems to consider porting Photoshop to Linux these days, as some large shops request a port. We'll see. I don't use it anymore, so I don't care (I like Newtek Aura/ Bauhaus Mirage much better these days), but quite a few users should be very happy if a port shows up.

leovanham,

even though more and more stuff becomes point-and-click on Linux these days, I for one prefer to use the command line for configuration and system updates/ software installation. It's much faster and more 'direct'... :-)

Rudy,

edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, add "Option "RenderAccel" "true"" to Nvidia device section, and everything should be quite snappy. This option is off by default as it may lead to strange lock-ups on certain system configurations (the reason for those crashes are still not known).

I used to love linux, now I only like it.

About a year ago I used only linux for a while then it got to the point that I needed to do something and didn't have the time to learn how (due to school and me being a complete linux noob) so I went back to Windows. I've tried to go back to linux but I cant find one that I really like, I cant explain why. I've tried out Ubuntu but I just don't like it, not sure why; now I'm trying out Fedora and if I don't like it I will try out Arch since I've read good things about it.

Just my 2c.

Thats not a linux problem, Linux does has a higher learning curve, you need to have a hardware knowledge

.

BTW every linux user was a n00b once.

I know it's not a linux problem, I was never blaming linux. It's all me, I just dont have the attetion span or the motivation to learn it lol. Now if I was going to setup a server then I would spend the time to learn it but since I'm not, I just don't have the motivation to do it.

    • I have a older F4-210 NAS, it is pretty basic, the CPU is not the fastest by a long way and only 1GB of ram, but it works fine. I don't understand the need for A.I in a NAS. It seems like A.i is being shoved into everything, if we like it or not. i will stick to my old Terramsater NAS, thankfully the OS is not being updated. Also, got myself a small NAs built using a Raspberry Pi 5. iy usesd less energy, so stays on all the time. As for the unit above, if it is as reliable as my old Terramaster Nas, then it will be a good unit.
    • Gemini in Google Sheets can now help you debug and fix formula errors by David Uzondu Google has started rolling out an update to Gemini in Google Sheets that allows the AI to diagnose and fix formula errors in one click, as long as your Workspace admin has Gemini for Workspace in Sheets turned on. According to Google, the new feature can handle pretty much everything from basic arithmetic to very complex calculations. This ability to debug formula errors comes about two years after Google introduced basic formula generation with Gemini in Sheets. To create a formula with Gemini in Sheets, you open a spreadsheet on your computer and click Ask Gemini in the top right corner. You can also enter an equals sign in any cell and use a shortcut like Ctrl + Alt + G on Windows and Chrome OS, or Command + Ctrl + G on macOS. Once you open the side panel, you write a natural language prompt using your sheet references. For example, you can ask Gemini to divide goals by games, or to find cell C1 in range D:G. If for some reason, the formula Gemini generated doesn't work, or maybe you wrote the formula yourself, you can troubleshoot the issue directly inside the grid. When a cell shows an error message, you hover over it and click "Fix". This action opens the side panel where Gemini analyzes the data structure and automatically applies the fixes when they are ready. You can cancel the process at any time by clicking stop in the side panel. Image via Google Google has been pushing its Gemini integration in Google Sheets for a while now, steadily moving AI features from side panels directly into user spreadsheets. Last year, the Mountain View giant shipped an =AI() Function in Sheets that allowed users to run translation and text generation directly inside cells instead of using the side panel interface. Earlier this year, the company announced that Gemini in Sheets had reached near-human expert performance, achieving a 70.48% success rate on the SpreadsheetBench dataset.
    • I get what you are saying, If i go onto the Instagram site, it says log in with Facebook, but they are not allowed to link my account with Instagram until I do that. Maybe in the U.S, they can link them, but Privacy is not a thing in the U.S. the way things are going,l won;t be any better in the U.K.

    • Exactly, this is just the beginning. I hope that by that time, our inept politicians devise something like a Universal Basic Income, because unemployment and poverty rates will skyrocket otherwise. And believe me, robots that perform physical work aren't a matter of IF, but WHEN. No career is truly safe from AI/robots, it's just a matter of time.
