Codecs:

Mega K-Lite Codec Pack

Ultimate Codec Pack. Contains DivX, XVid, 3vid, loads of other codecs, also replaces QuickTime and RealPlayer for use with Media Player. Don't use this if you don't know what you're doing though.

PDF Readers:

Foxit Reader

Far better than Adobes PDF reader, no installation required, tiny program but just as good (if not better) than Adobe's PDF Reader.

Replaces old icons that Microsoft have overlooked, and makes the appearance far better, just be careful when installing the extras, I personally didn't want there boot screen and some other stuff, just make sure you know what you are installing, though the icons are excellent.

I use PicaView 32, but it ain't free, its also a converter and does other things. Winamp never had the need to use, Firefox is somehting I've yet to add, anyways I'm welcome for people to post up stuff, this is just stuff that i've used and not afraid to say is what you should have.

First off, you aren't providing any comparison to alternatives, as I try to do here: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=277251

Secondly, you are breaking the rules by posting the codec pack. Please remove.

Thirdly: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=320017

Whats the rule against the codec pack?

I've seen the freeware list, I just put mine up to say what I think is the best, why post stuff thats crap as you have shown in your list?

Are you saying there is only 1 or 2 good programs in every field  I'm comparing them and giving reasons why I think what is better.

It's against neowin's rules because the codec pack includes codecs that are illegally stolen from companies such as apple or real.

https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=...unce&f=12&id=11

Like what? For free programs this really is the best (some of), what do you suggest?

Zip Utilities:

7-Zip

Office Suite:

I will give you credit there, OpenOffice is the best free one.

P2P Spyware Free Apps:

Limewire-Fastest and Free!

Codecs:

Not allowed to list (but go to FileHippo.com and check)

PDF Readers:

Foxit is fine, although the Adobe Reader 7 is much faster than previous versions.

All the rest of the stuff you list (themes, appearance stuff, etc.) is of no concern or use to me, so I will trust your sources there.

But there are loads of other free apps that are great (CrapCleaner, Picasa2, Firefox, Opera, Anti-vir Free Edition, Aim AdHack, CutePDF, CD Burner XP Pro, SyncBack SE, etc.) for your computer and such.

Your list just seemed a little vague really, and not coverning many categories, that's all.

Edited it, just no link as that post you showed says. I'm not saying that there are only 1 or 2 programs, but for FREE ones I have just posted the best (in my opinion), not ones that are rubbish and that people do not want to read.

Not to sound full of myself, but I've listed many many more free applications that are good than you have. Just make your list longer before posting.

    • Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2 to finally get one of the most requested features by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft officially confirmed Windows 11 version 26H2 with the latest build, 26300.8697, for testing in the experimental Insider channel. The company also published more details about it mainly directed towards IT admins and system admins. Essentially version 26H2 will be delivered via an enablement package (eKB) over Windows 11 25H2. If you are wondering about some of the upcoming features in the next Windows version, one of them is certainly very interesting as Microsoft has confirmed it is finally bringing one of the most overwhelmingly requested features ever. March Rogers, the Partner Director of Design at Microsoft, recently highlighted some of the Search improvements that the company is testing, and during the interaction with users on X where he posted it, Rogers also confirmed that the company is working on disabling web search results inside Search. This is something which many users find quite annoying as Windows would often serve them links to Bing which it feels could be more helpful rather than bringing up the actual object or app the user may be searching for on their PC. Finally though the company is prioritizing local file search over the web. However the feature could not be disabled for many users as not all new features are immediately rolled out to everyone. Image via phantomofearth (X) Windows enthusiast phantomofearth who likes to dig deep into new builds uncovered the IDs you will need to enable these features. Using the following feature IDs the new Search-related features landing in Windows 11 26H2 can be used. Follow the steps below to enable the new Search experience on Windows 11 build 26300.8697: Download ViveTool from GitHub and unpack the files in a convenient and easy-to-find folder. Press Win + X and select Terminal (Admin). Switch Windows Terminal to the Command Prompt profile with the Ctrl + Shift + 2 shortcut or by clicking the arrow-down button at the top of the window. Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the CD command. For example, if you have placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive. Type vivetool /enable /id: and press Enter. Restart your computer. If you change your mind and want to restore, repeat the steps above and replace /enable with /disable in the commands on steps 5 and 6. Delightedly and perhaps also expectedly, once you disable web search and other such bloat, the Windows 11 Search is said to get snappier as remarked by another Windows enthusiast Xeno.
