Why do all websites have a white background?

Question

My friend is having some trouble with his computer. Every web page he visits has a white background even if the website has another color background. This problem occurs in both IE and the newest version of Firefox. He is running Windows XP. I have no idea what is wrong with his computer/settings, can someone help me out. THANKS

The missing images could be blocked by a firewall. I once used Kerio firewall. Everytime I would visit Neowin, about half the images would fail to load. For the background, I can only think of something like a browser override. Doesn't firefox have a feature to set that option?
