January 2006 Desktop Thread

Recommended Posts

Well I thought I would be the first one to do this since a lot of the world has already welcomed 2006 and a thread hasn't been started.

We all know the rules but here they are anyway:

Posting Guidelines:

* If you plan to img-embed your desktop, please try to keep it at/under 1024x768 and under 100k (It's recommended that you link it, externally).

* Stay within the board rules, no matter how yummy you may believe it to be.

* If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embedded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.

* Off Topic Posts will be edited or removed.

* The desktops thread is not to be used as a means to post images of a pornographic or otherwise provocative nature. We do not support a babes forum and neither will we in an unofficial capacity. Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.

* The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary so they may comply with our Community Ruleset.

* In the interests of keeping the thread on topic it is strongly urged that you format your posts in the following order:

* Visual Style: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

* Wallpaper: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

* Icons: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

* Programs: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Here is mine:

Wait this has to be posted by a mod!

Doesn't have to be posted by a mod.....just has to be pinned by one. I sent them a PM about it. Many months has an ordinary member started this thread and a mod has come along and pinned it.

Oompa can you tell me what program and how you got setup that transparent bar at the bottom of your screen with the weather, stats? Id like to set that up.

As well, is that standard Windows command prompt or another program?

It's a Samurize Script. It's Console.

what can i do. My desktop is bigger than 1024 kb and cant upload it at imageshack. any place else?

Download "IrfanView" and save it again as a jpeg.

Same as always, I will never find something better.

Is that the wallpaper creating that drop shadow or something else?

Can I have that wallpaper either way?

    • If only Windows would have a toggle switch named "Get the latest updates as soon as possible" inside Windows Update settings... But nah, let's hide the new stuff inside a controlled feature rollout, even if the user is explicitly asking for the new stuff as soon as possible.
    • After watching the Apple event earlier this week it is quite the contrast. Apple is going back and tweaking the code to make things more efficient in many areas of MacOS. Windows is boosting your electric build to hide their issues.
    • It is silly there is no simple way to check whether this profile has been activated. CFRs are normal, but trying to even hide the fact if it's on / off seems silly, especially for something so user-facing. Surely Microsoft is "proud" of their engineering efforts on this one and ought to display it somwhere in the GUI.
    • Many Linux distros are not known for excellent battery life, so I'm not sure that is the best example. A more apt example may be Apple, but Apple's CPUs are simply far more efficient than Intel & AMD at single-threaded tasks like these, so "boosting" is not as power-hungry and less heat-inducing. Not to mention Apple will hardly engage P-cores for basic UI tasks; they use a pretty complicated QoS scheme to only activate P-cores for more serious workloads like HTML / JS execution or decompression or application launch. Microsoft is (smartly) doing it for launch, but also for UI tasks, which is the more nonsensical part: why ... do Windows 11's UIs need modern CPUs to boost? It should load so quickly that there's not even time for the CPU to boost.
    • I've not seen any controlled testing and, judging by Microsoft's mentality, within a year, they'll have added so much more bloat, it'll undo any perceptible latency benefit and we'll have boosted the CPU clocks for nothing.
