Palmer's Knee Injury Career-threatening

ESPNews reports Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer (knee) received news from the surgeon who operated on his knee, Dr. Lonnie Paulos of Houston, that his injury is much more severe than originally noted. In fact, Dr. Paulos stated the injury is career-threatening.

If Palmer doesn't come back 100%, this is going to kill the Bengals, because they just gave him a massive contract extension.

Check out that AP story on it.

Sounds like the surgeon is tooting his own horn, to be honest.

Holy **** my favorite team. Well I hope Steelers feel good they aren't gonna beat Indianapolis.

If Pallmer leaves the Bengals are out of the picture until they find another good qb cause lets face it john kitna can't cut it.

It's not the Steelers fault, Palmer's injury was absolutely accidental. And either way John Kitna played just as well as Palmer was and the Steelers kicked their ass anyways. You think the Steelers aren't gonna beat Indy? I'd bet money that they will win. You'll see. Steelers will defeat Chicago in the superbowl, bwhahaha!

Yeah I feel sorry for the guy, on the upside, with modern medicine the way it is and the fact he was not a great mobile quarterback anyway, so he will not be running around if he can come back he will not have really lost mobility since he did not really run around much, compared to Vick

Bzzzzt - incorrect, Yorak; the anwer we were looking for is:

Enjoy your ignorance!

i thought contracts weren't guaranteed in the NFL? so like, the bengals won't have to pay palmer if he doesn't play? can someone explain to me?

I live in Newport, Kentucky. I'm right across from the river from Cincinnati

The doctor hasn't actually said that this is the end for Palmer. He said these types of injuries are known for ending careers and that Palmers injury isn't as bad as people are making it out to be. He said some good rehab and he should be fine.

I just heard that on the news earlier today and it was from the doctor himself calling into the station over the phone.

I bet if Palmer didn't get injured the Bengals would have won that game or at least played a lot better. Kitna isn't a very good QB, Palmer isn't as great as he's made out to be, but he's a lot better than Kitna.

Considering I have torn my ACL and partially torn my MCL from playing sports all at once, all I can say is Carson is up for one hell of a challenge. The first weeks after surgery are hell and rehab will be hell itself. I feel bad for the guy :/

Contracts are not guaranteed, but signing bonus is. If a player is injured, the team can either keep him and pay him his salary, or release him. However, if he is released, the team takes a "cap hit", which is the prorated remaining portion of the signing bonus remaining.

Here's how it works:

If a player signed a 7 year $98 million contract, with a $21 million signing bonus, if the team decides to release him after only two seasons of the contract are up, the team will take a $15 million cap hit. Why? Because the signing bonus is divided by the years of the contract. In this case, the signing bonus counts $3 million against the cap for each season of the contract. If the team releases the player, the remainder of the prorated bonus "accelerates."

Basically, yeah the Bengals could release Palmer, and not pay any of the base salaries on the rest of the years of the contract, but they'd take a huge cap hit. A cap hit ends up being "dead money", money that counts against the cap, but is not being used on any player.

What's interesting about signing bonuses is that they are paid immediately when the contract is signed (usually), but they count against the cap for the entire length of the contract.

I said I would bet money, not that I did. :D

Sorry if I sounded a little cocky, its just that I really cant believe they won. I counted out as well but I still had hopes...

I will bet money that they go all the way and win the Superbowl. And yeah there are some that said that if Palmer didn't get injured that they would have beaten the Steelers, well look at the fact that the Bungals couldn't beat the Colts yet the Steelers got the job done even after being completely f***ing screwed by the retarded referee that was most likely paid off. End of story. Come back in 2 weeks after the Steelers win the Superbowl and try running your mouth again. Kthnx.

Actually, if Palmer didn't get injured, the Bengals probably would have beaten the Steelers up. If the Bengals stayed close with a QB like Kitna, I'm almost positive if Palmer was the QB, they would have beaten the Steelers quite easily. Lets face it, Palmer changed the whole team of the Bengals and without him, they are back to mediocrity.

OK, fine. How much you willing to bet?

It's easy to say the bengals would have won had Palmer been in the game. I could just as easily say the Steelers would have went undefeated this whole season had Ben not got hurt and had to have surgery. Indy was the "best" team but the steelers along with other teams had the capability of beating them. Indy didn't even diserve to be in the game with the steelers. Steelers were under rated coming into the playoffs everyone just looked at their record not why they lost games they did (ex. Tommy Maddox shouldn't be playing football but go back to selling insurance door to door)

    • Absolutely NOBODY has suggested such a conclusion. I am affirming the sober reality check that AV2's overall market adoption will take longer than AV1's adoption rate -- which, by the way, is the whole point of the article! While PCI-SIG is productive (on paper), other WGs have created all sorts of confusing progress plans that consumers have tuned-out of their improvements... HTML/W3C, USB, HDMI, BT, WIFI (ieee802.11) as a few other groups where spec naming conventions, split progress paths, overlapping ambitions... I'm not critiquing the AV specs group; I'm simply affirming that adoption for AV2 faces headwinds beyond the macroeconomics of it all.
